Sun’s out, guns out: 3 ace watches to kick off the summer vibes

James Robinson

Yes, we’re somewhat getting ahead of ourselves here, but with the abject misery of Australia’s particularly dismal winter now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to start thinking about ideal summer watches.

What’s more, thanks to the land of Oz perpetually being six months behind the Northern Hemisphere’s summer style, we’ve already got a pretty clear idea as to what’s in vogue for the warmer months ahead.

It might not come as a surprise to many, but white watches are definitely making a strong case for being attached to your wrist for when the thermostat cracks 30+ degrees.

So, with that in mind, here are three of our favourite watches that will pair well with some SPF 50+:

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe

It seems logical to assume that if you’re looking for a summer watch, chances are you’re going to be heading to the beach at some point. And when it comes to watches that are as comfortable in the water as they are out, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms has got to be in the discussion. Luckily for us, the Swiss marque does offer the prolific dive watch with a distinctly white theme that includes a glossy white ceramic bezel, crisp and highly legible white dial and a wonderfully pale white sail-canvas strap. Available in a particularly civilised and practical 38mm case that’s also just 10.70mm thick, the Fifty Fathoms comes equipped with Blancpain’s Caliber 1150 movement, which features up to 100 hours of power reserve and a silicon balance spring.

Hublot Spirit of Big Bang White Ceramic

Hublot Spirit of Big Bang White Ceramic

If we were after a flex watch purely to wear from December through to February, then this white ceramic variant of Hublot’s popular Spirit of Big Bang would have to run it pretty close. Apart from the overtly flamboyant micro-blasted and polished white ceramic 45mm case, this Spirit of Big Bang sports a striking white alligator leather strap with rubber lining and a very impressive open-worked dial which shows off Hublot’s HUB4700 skeletonised movement. Offering owners 50 hours of power reserve, 100 metres of water resistance and a date and chronograph complication, there’s a lot to like about what this timepiece has to offer, and it has genuine presence on this wrist.

Longines Legend Diver

Longines Legend DiverNot only is the Longines Legend Diver one of our favourite diving watches here at Time+Tide, we reckon it’s a wonderfully interesting timepiece that offers buyers exceptional value for money. Sporting a gorgeous shimmery mother-of-pearl dial, white internal bi-directional rotating bezel and white leather band, this surely has to be one of the lighter-hearted examples from the Legend Diver range. Features include 300 metres of water resistance, silvered polished hands, Super-LumiNova and Longines’ self-winding Caliber L592 movement, which is good for 40 hours of power reserve. In addition, this iteration is the 36mm model. For those looking for a slightly more sedate wristwatch that still retains a decidedly summer flair, this could be the pick of the bunch.
