Straum brings frozen Norwegian landscapes to life with the new Frozen Metal Titanium

Straum has carved out its own niche over the past few years by taking inspiration from the Norwegian landscape and translating it into captivating dial work. The brand has consistently used texture, finish, and colour to capture the character of those environments and pay homage to its roots, while standing out as a key player in the ever-growing integrated-bracelet watch scene.
The new Jan Mayen Frozen Metal Titanium builds on that formula with a fresh, icy dial finish inspired by creeping frost, but arguably the bigger story sits a bit closer to the wrist. This is also the debut of Straum’s long-awaited grade 5 titanium bracelet, complete with a proprietary micro-adjust clasp and compatibility across the brand’s existing titanium models.
One of the most attractive features of the Jan Mayen is the way it sits on your wrist. It’s a beautifully proportioned watch with just enough presence to wear as an attractive showpiece, yet subtle enough to be a daily wearer in most circumstances. While in grade 5 titanium, this model shares the finely bead-blasted finish with the rest of the range, complemented by neatly polished edges that break up the look and add a touch of luxury.
Measuring 38.7mm wide and 11.5mm thick, including the crystal, the case sits in that wonderful middle ground that suits most wrists. Pair that with a screw-down crown and 100 metres of water resistance, and you have yourself a very respectable, versatile sports watch.
It wouldn’t be a Jan Mayen if it weren’t based on iconic aspects of Norway’s rich landscapes, and this crisp white version with blue details captures it perhaps even more literally than we’ve seen before. Straum has developed a proprietary galvanic treatment that creates what the brand describes as a reverse fumé effect. Instead of darkening the outer edges, the process frosts them, leaving the bare metal dial looking as though ice is gradually spreading inwards from the perimeter.
This is then paired with polished “Frostbite Blue” PVD-coated hands and applied indices that stand out sharply against the silver-white dial, maintaining excellent legibility while leaning into the cold, icy theme associated with the Arctic Circle.
Turning the watch over reveals a neat exhibition sapphire caseback, offering a clear view of the La Joux-Perret G101 automatic calibre. It’s a movement that’s become a familiar sight in independent watchmaking for good reason, pairing a healthy 68-hour power reserve with a 28,800 Vph beat rate and dependable day-to-day performance. Straum has opted for the no-date version here, avoiding the phantom crown positions found on some alternatives, while the Soigné-grade calibre is adjusted to four positions for improved accuracy.
Although the dial will attract most of the attention, existing Straum owners may be just as interested in what’s attached to the case of the Frozen Metal Titanium. This release marks the debut of the brand’s long-awaited integrated grade 5 titanium bracelet, which is also available separately to fit existing titanium Jan Mayen models.
The custom bracelet tapers from 24.8mm at the case to 18mm at the clasp, combining bead-blasted facets and polished edges to match the case finishing. Inside, chamfered edges are designed to improve comfort and flexibility, while the butterfly clasp incorporates Straum’s proprietary micro-adjust system, offering 4mm of on-the-fly adjustment. Add in the new quick-release system, and this makes for a strong upgrade that extends well beyond the Frozen Metal Titanium model itself. If you prefer, the Jan Mayen is still available on an FKM fluoroelastomer rubber strap, which comes in a variety of colours.
