The Spooky Watch Guide: Our Top 5 Halloween Watch picks

Felix Scholz

Halloween. The night when the spirits of the dead and children in need of dental work roam the earth, and eerie spectres lurk in every shadow. And while questions of mortality, the world beyond and the good and evil are eternal and unknowable, they are not your main concern on this, the spookiest night of the year. The real question to ask is – what is the perfect Halloween watch? Well, unlike the shades of the restless undead, you need not seek any further – Time+Tide has (like the grizzled caretaker in a schlock zombie film), got your back. We’ve put together a haunted mansion worth of scare-tastic watches for your wrist, or hook hand.

The Seiko SRP311 is, in true Seiko model naming style – not particularly imaginative. However the nickname of this watch is the ‘Sharptooth Orange Monster’, which on its own makes it perfect for Halloween. It’s the latest version of the Seiko fan favourite  ‘Orange Monster’ diver (the ‘Sharpteeth’ are a new design addition). This is our favourite Halloween watch, not only because of the accessible price (they can be had for under $500), but also because, in the right light the dial resembles the gaping maw of a slathering hellhound.

The Peter Speake-Marin unique piece ‘faces of time’ continues the English born watchmaker’s ongoing relationships with skulls on dials. And sure, the historical allegories around mortality and time (tempis fugit and all that) are pretty well documented – but that’s a little too highbrow for Halloween – so we’re mainly attracted to it because it’s a top notch unique watch from a serious independent watchmaker and it features not one, but two skulls!

There are some brands out there that revel in the theatrical and the shocking. Romain Jerome is one of those brands. Many of their watches feature skulls, but our pick for their best Halloween offering is this model; a limited edition Historical Icon piece celebrating Dia De Los Muertos. Not only is it a skull on a black watch, it’s a colourful skull in the rich tradition of the Mexican Day of the Dead festival. Breaking Bad flashbacks are guaranteed.

This Glycine Airman SST isn’t as obviously Halloween as some of the other watches here – it’s distinctly lacking in skulls for one thing. However the affectionate nickname for this discontinued piece is the ‘Pumpkin’ – and if you’re the type of guy who concerns about matching your wrist to your jack-o-lantern, this might well be the perfect watch for you.

Last, but definitely not least on our roster of watches from beyond the grave (it sounds cooler if you say it in a Vincent Price voice) is the Bell & Ross BR01-92 Airborne. Bell&Ross might have intended it to be a homage to the fighting spirit of the US Airborne forces, but really, a watch with a giant skull and crossbones on it  (especially a skull that glows in the dark) is made for Halloween.
