Russell Crowe and Andrew reunite at Indoor Garden Party gig – but what was on Rusty’s wrist?
Zach BlassIf you asked us what our most viewed YouTube video of all time is, the answer, perhaps unsurprisingly, would be our video with Russell Crowe back in March 2018 (which to date has over 1.1M views). Our bread and butter is hands-on watch reviews with voiceover narration, but who could ever top Russell Crowe himself narrating an overview of twelve of his watches that were then up for grabs at Sotheby’s “The Watches of Russell Crowe: The Art of Divorce” auction?
Since this collaborative video, our Andrew McUtchen has remained in contact with Crowe – which is why we were able to get the scoop that a watch once up for sale that was purported to be Crowe’s Cinderella Man Rolex Submariner was not his watch. Rather, it was a watch he gifted to a member of the film’s crew.
Fast-forward to the present, Andrew recently linked up with Crowe in London. The Gladiator star was in town not because of a film, but rather for a concert. While Crowe’s films are widely known, more under-the-radar is his involvement with Indoor Garden Party – a group founded in 2005 by Crowe and Alan Doyle. Apple Music explains: “Indoor Garden Party isn’t a band so much as it is a collective – a gathering of songwriters, singers, and musicians who play occasional gigs.” Andrew’s first love is music, but once the show was over, and he met with Crowe backstage, the horological detective in him was dying to know what Crowe was sporting on his wrist beneath his blue sweatband.

Andrew recalls: “I caught up with Russell Crowe at his Indoor Garden Party gig in London and it was awesome. The big man can sing! But, of course, the big question on my mind: what watch did he wear on stage? When I caught up with him after the show I had to know the answer, and he cheekily pulled up his sweatband to reveal his watch hidden beneath.”
The answer: the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712/1R-001 in rose gold. The 40mm beaut is very slender at 8.52mm thick due to its 240 PS micro-rotor calibre that drives the hours, minutes, small seconds, date, moonphase, and power reserve indications displayed on its chocolate brown dial – a perfect match for the 18k rose gold case and bracelet. Andrew notes, “It is a demure size for a unit like Maximus, but he loves it for its comfort and colourway.” The watch sells at retail, if you can get it, for US$83,100, but it trades on the secondary market for around US$225,000.
