Four Rolex watches you can actually buy that are still gaining value

Zach Blass

Let me just say from the outset that traditional investment strategies are generally a much safer bet than watches. Having said that, many watches have the potential to gain in value so that if and when the time come to part with the timepiece, you will get your money back (and possibly more). When it comes to Rolex, it is no secret that a stainless-steel Daytona, a GMT-Master II Batgirl or a Pepsi will all command serious premiums in the marketplace. But what about watches that you don’t have to pay a large premium for? In fact, what about Rolex watches you can actually buy that are still gaining value? That will enable you to get ahead of the curve and purchase before they hit high-peak premiums. Here are four such watches, available now (at least at the time of writing) at Bob’s Watches – you can click on the prices listed for each watch to go check them out!

Rolex Explorer II ref. 16570 Polar Dial

Actual Watch For Sale At Bob’s Watches

The Rolex Explorer II 16570 is a great watch for those who want the model but don’t love its latest and larger 42mm iteration. The 16570 is 40mm in diameter, more in line with the classic and vintage proportions of its predecessors. The watch was produced from 1989 to 2011, an admirable run within the catalogue, utilising the 3185/3186 in-house GMT and date movements throughout. One important note: it is believed that A-serial models will use a hollow link bracelet and D-serial models use solid end links – which may affect the fit and feel. Another thing to look out for — models with tritium dials have the potential to possibly patina over time! Price: $7995 USD

Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 16622

The Rolex Yacht-Master ref. 16622 is a watch that does not always get the credit it deserves. The main thing that stands out about the watch, that not many (if any) Rolex watches share, is its platinum dial. Many Yacht-Master watches have platinum bezels, but the ref. 16622 has a matching platinum dial with a similar frosted/grained texture. We throw around the phrase “stealth wealth” a fair bit, but this watch truly does fit the bill – with the platinum elements seemingly blending into the majority of the watch made of stainless steel. At 40mm in diameter and 100 metres water-resistant, this is the Submariner’s more elegant cousin – and if you need a testimony for its quality, NBA legend David Robinson spoke about this watch in his Talk Watches episode with Hodinkee.  Price: $8595 USD

Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 116710 Black Bezel

The most subtle GMT-Master II of the modern era, the recently discontinued ref. 116710 all-black bezel GMT-Master II has begun to capture the interest of collectors who like watches no longer available for sale. Discontinuations have a history of elevating the asking prices for watches second-hand, because you cannot even inquire for such pieces at retail. As a result, the 116710 is beginning to climb higher in price, but is not too distant from its original retail asking price. While some may find the all-black ceramic bezel a bit too quiet and staid, it does cater to those who want a predominantly black aesthetic. Don’t forget though, there is a pop of colour with its Rolex green GMT hand and printed GMT-Master II text above the sixth hour index. Price: $12,995 USD

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 116503 White Dial

Most assume two-tone watches don’t fare well second-hand, but this is not a universal rule. Watches like the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116503 white dial have typically held near the original asking price of the watch at retail. But as frustration grows at the lack of availability and premium for pure stainless-steel models, the two-tone version begins to look a lot better (and more feasible as well). This modern two-tone Daytona has the vintage appeal of a metallic bezel, but has the newer innovations from the crown as well – including their in-house 4130 movement and Easylink extension in the Oyster clasp. While not rocketing up in value, the 116503 is showing signs of a steady but sure climb – and two-tone’s return to glory may not be so far off. Price: $19,495 USD
