READER COMMENT: Day 1 of Basel 2018, from your point of view. Our favourite comments, overshares and concerns

Crowdsourcing is all the rage at the moment. And we love being on-trend as much as we love the idea of involving our community on the site, so here’s what we think we might do. For Baselworld, we’re going to publish our favourite comments from social media on a semi-regular basis. Why? Because occasionally there’s such high concentrations of wisdom, humour and ignorance that we think it would be rude not to share. In the comments, we also see a daily journey as the watches we’re unveiling cause emotions: good, bad and ambivalent.

So, let’s begin. But before we do, here’s how to play if you want to feature in a future Crowdsourced Content dispatch: be wise, be funny, or be outrageous. That ought to do it.

The day started with the battle of the cola-flavoured beverages. Well, one in particular — the Pepsi (the Rolex GMT-Master II in stainless steel, or ‘Oystersteel’) as delivered by both stablemates Rolex and Tudor. Our fearless leader, Andrew, got the jump comparing both models. Did we expect it? Good question. A steel Rolex sports models was on most prediction lists for this Baselworld but many speculated it would be a Coke (Black and Red Bezel).

But the Tudor Pepsi? That was something out of left field, and many of you couldn’t properly deal. There was love unlimited.

The Jubilee bracelet made this person very happy, but it generally seemed to divide our readers, with many asking for a traditional Oyster bracelet option.

The Tudor Black Bay GMT with Pepsi bezel definitely surprised you more, judging by the exclamation marks. But overwhelmingly, you dug it straight up, and several shouted for Tudor to take their money. @bzbri shut the front door, even.

At the other end of the hall, Longines gave us some exciting new releases and from launch, the Longines Legend Diver in black PVD was winning …

And converting.

But where there’s vintage Longines reissues, however, there are what some like to call ‘date-haters’. @niccoloy wasted no time casting the first stone.

But for every date-hater, there’s a date-lover, and they punched right back.

As always, we found ourselves somewhere in the middle. Andrew caused general confusion when he posted a mermaid with a trident, instead of a farmer with a pitchfork, in a humorous reference to the barn-burning army of date-haters …

Overall, in the words of Ice Cube, it was a good day, and we didn’t have to use our comment-deleting AK, even once. And, despite many wrist rolls, some of you wanted more. God bless you @frankiarthur …

Until the next time!
