Raymond Weil & seconde/seconde/ present a special edition Toccata that’s by no means off the cuff
Tom Austin- Raymond Weil unveils a playful take on the Toccata Heritage that outlines the rules for how to wear a dress watch in collaboration with seconde/seconde/.
- Its dial is split down the centre, then incrementally marked, representing where your cuff should sit depending on the occasion.
- The caseback also features a small aperture and tongue-in-cheek instructions on how and when to wind a watch.
Thankfully, we appear to be leaving the era where, for some reason, it seemed okay to wear a large sports watch with a suit (it wasn’t and has never been!) Dress watches are finally getting the love they’ve always deserved, and are no longer reserved for the older generation or seen as a fringe style choice. You only need to look at what’s on celebrities’ wrists on the red carpet to see where that influence is coming from, and dress watch culture is spreading in a big way.
The difference, though, is that those celebs all have wardrobe departments and stylists looking after them, dressing them in a certain way to look effortlessly glamorous and devilishly handsome. We, on the other hand, aren’t afforded such luxuries and have to fend for ourselves when it comes to proper dress. But fear not, as Raymond Weil has partnered with Romaric André of seconde/seconde/ to give us the answer, in the form of the Toccata Heritage seconde/seconde/, a watch that ensures there are no excuses for a fashion faux pas.
The classic shape of the Toccata has grabbed headlines recently, and for good reason. Its svelte, elliptical design with small, shaped lugs has been an instant hit, and at 33mm wide and 38mm long, it hits the sweet spot in classy dress-watch territory. At just 6.95mm thick, it slips perfectly under a cuff… But more on that in a moment.
Importantly, the crown is small yet usable, neatly fluted, and finished off with an RW monogram. Then the rear of the watch is closed off with a screw-down caseback, which features probably the smallest sapphire exhibition caseback I’ve ever seen, just exposing the column wheel. But again, we’ll get to that shortly.
The watch is made in collaboration with Romaric André, the man behind the horological art project seconde/seconde/, and looking a little closer, you can tell where all this playful inspiration came from. The watch itself is a play on the rules set for wearing a dress watch – how far under the cuff it should be worn, depending on the circumstances, and it’s, of course, been executed amusingly well. Firstly, the dial is split into two halves. On the left, there’s a matte anthracite finish that creates an almost shadow-like effect, showing that, in case you didn’t know, a dress shirt cuff should always cover at least half of the dial.
The right side, however, is in full view, with a gorgeous anthracite sunburst finish, paired with polished applied hour markers. The cool thing, though, is that all the instructions are laid out for you, printed on the underside of the crystal. In typical seconde/seconde/ style, the text is printed in bright yellow, highlighting where the cuff should sit, should you be dressed in business casual, semi-formal, or formal.
The playful theme continues on the back of the watch, too, with that tiny sapphire exhibition window focusing purely on the column wheel, which turns when you wind the watch. This is showcased alongside an engraved lesson from Romaric about watch winding etiquette: “Never wind your watch while wearing it. Take it off first, then wind it in a dramatic fashion (ideally in the middle of a conversation”. It’s a hilarious touch, gently teasing about some of the ridiculous things we watch collectors and enthusiasts do.
Underneath the caseback, the watch is as serious as any. This version comes equipped with the manually-wound RW4100 calibre, based on a Sellita movement. It receives some light decoration and offers a 45-hour power reserve, which is plenty for a thin, time-only dress watch like this. Finally, the Toccata is finished with a black, alligator-style calfskin leather strap, which closes with a stainless steel pin buckle. It’s a strap that lets you not worry about it suiting whatever you wear on those dressier occasions. Just make sure you follow the instructions to get it right…
