Raymond Weil’s Freelancer Complete Calendar brings complications to the masses
Tom Austin- Raymond Weil continues to bring complications to a more affordable level by unveiling the new Freelancer Complete Calendar.
- Featuring a self-winding movement with a moonphase, month, day and date, the Complete Calendar marks a milestone for the Freelancer collection.
- Available in two variations, the Freelancer Complete Calendar comes in either stainless steel with a sunray blue dial or a PVD rose gold case and a sunray silver dial.
Most watch enthusiasts love complications. Some of us love GMTs or world timers, while others lust over chronographs or minute repeaters. While there’s nothing better than discovering that ultra-complicated piece that fits just what you wanted, it’s true that the more complicated these things get, the less accessible they become. Raymond Weil had other ideas. They’ve always played in the entry-level luxury space, and their latest effort, the Freelancer Complete Calendar, is one of the most compelling yet.
Raymond Weil’s Freelancer collection has been with us since 2007. It covers everything from sports chronographs to chunky divers, but it generally encompasses a classic line of watches that closely follow what you might expect from a typical wristwatch. The Complete Calendar is no different. At 40mm, it’s reasonably sized and comes in either polished or rose gold PVD-coated stainless steel. The proportions are contemporary, with long, tapered lugs and a curved bezel that extends to the edge of the case.
The interesting part is its thickness. At just 10.15mm, the Freelancer Complete Calendar is one of the thinnest complete calendar watches on the market, beating more expensive competitors from the likes of IWC and Vacheron Constantin. Overall, the case is pleasant to look at and comfortable to wear, and the screw-down crown offers water resistance of up to 100 metres, which is another big plus.
There are different dials for each of the two case options. The stainless steel version is matched with a sunray blue, and the rose gold is paired with a sunray silver that Raymond Weil has labelled “dune”. The dials are large and clearly laid out, with a date sub-dial and moon phase indicator at 6 o’clock, and day/month windows up top. The moonphase features a NASA-inspired image on a blue backdrop, which stands out much more on the silver dial than the blue one. Both dials have polished applied indices alongside Super-LumiNova-filled hands. The result is a pair of elegant and refined-looking dials that punch way above their collective weight.
The Freelancer Complete Calendar is driven by the new RW3281 calibre, a self-winding movement based on the Sellita SW300-1, delivering a substantial 56 hours of power at 4Hz. Raymond Weil has a history of partnering with Sellita to develop and modify its calibres, and the RW3281 has been modified extensively to accommodate the additional calendar complications. The base calibre is a strong movement fitted in several respected watches, and considering the lengths RW has gone to improving it, it’s a good fit – and I say that in a literal sense, too. The SW300 is known for its thinness, which likely plays a part in the overall thickness of the watch, too. It may not win any beauty awards, but it’s more than adequate, delivering information in a clear way and at a compelling price.
The two models differ in their strap/bracelet pairing. The blue-dialled number is equipped with a five-link, Jubilee-style bracelet with an RW-branded folding clasp, while the rose gold variation goes for a brown calfskin and a case-matching folding clasp.
Who says complicated watches need to be expensive and out of reach? The Raymond Weil Complete Calendar is a watch that brings complications to a much wider audience thanks to its considered price point, and doesn’t scrimp on aesthetics, either. The Freelancer Complete Calendar is a solid option for anyone looking for a contemporary watch with an interesting complication, at a price that’s not going to make your finances complicated.
