Look at all the Patek Philippe releases for Watches and Wonders 2025, and you’ll be met with super-complicated, ornate desk clocks, the Quadruple Complication ref. 5308G, and yes, a couple of new Cubitus models. But I was most curious about the Calatrava 8 Day, a brand new development from the Patek team, featuring a manually wound movement delivering a staggering eight days of power reserve – or was it nine?
Catchily named the Calibre 31‑505 8J PS IRM CI J, this new movement actually overdelivers on the promises on the box. Thanks to two series-coupled barrels, it’s able to deliver eight days of “perfectly accurate operation”, while the dial actually indicates an additional, ninth day of power available too. What this means is that the torque delivered by the mainsprings is consistent enough across the first eight days of it unwinding that timekeeping should not be affected. On the ninth day, though the watch will still run, its accuracy may be affected – and this is shown by the red portion of the dial-side power reserve indicator.
As for the other specifications, the silicon-derived Silinvar escape wheel and lever of the Pulsomax escapement first came about from Patek’s Advanced Research programme, ticking away at 4Hz. It’s surrounded by nicely decorated, flowing bridges, with thin, polished bevels that aren’t too shouty about their execution.
On the dial side, you’ll notice that this particular Calatrava takes after its sportier stablemates rather than the iconic dress watch style it built its name on. The grained blue dial and sans-serif Arabics are a good match for the syringe handset, with a complex sub-dial at 6 o’clock integrating three functions. The aperture will tell you the day of the week, and just like the hand pointing to the date, will instantaneously change at midnight. The unmarked, inner railroad track is the running seconds, though I could honestly go without it – the whole thing gets a bit too complicated to read at a glance.
And it’s certainly not a traditional Calatrava when it comes to case size, either. Though you’ll find some classic touches like the hobnailed midcase, the 41mm diameter of the white gold 5328G will likely appeal to those not looking for an out-and-out dress watch. At 10.52mm thick, it’s not a behemoth, but it might struggle with some tight cuffs.
