The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante Arctic Rose is a masterclass in understated luxury
Andrew O'Connor- Parmigiani Fleurier unveils a new “Arctic Rose” dial for Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante for Dubai Watch Week 2025.
- This light, dusky rose tone appears almost white at some angles, and a rich pink at others.
- 40mm in diameter in stainless steel with a platinum bezel, its micro-rotor movement facilitates a unique rattrapante minute hand that functions as a countdown timer.
The Tonda PF GMT Rattrapante and previous iterations of the Minute Rattrapante have greatly impressed watch enthusiasts in recent years. These unique interpretations of dual-time and countdown timer functions make for functional timepieces that are elegant both physically and mechanically. Parmigiani’s refined Tonda case has made the model more in line with other contemporary integrated bracelet watches, while still carrying the brand’s unique identity, especially with the large tear-drop shaped lugs. At Dubai Watch Week 2025, Parmigiani released a new Arctic Rose dial variation of the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante, which manages to enhance further the brand’s ethos of “private luxury” and the “art of simplifying complexity.”
As Zach put it when he had the chance to wear the watch in Dubai, it’s got “a dial so good that it just makes you angry”, also calling it “elegant and over-engineered”. Big words. Well, now that the dust has settled after Dubai Watch Week (pun intended), here are my thoughts on this unusual rattrapante wristwatch.
The case
The Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante case remains the same from the previous iteration, measuring 40mm in diameter, 10.7mm thick, and offering 60 meters of water resistance. Its knurled bezel is made of platinum, and the pusher inset in the knurled crown at 3 o’clock is made of 18k rose gold, adding some front-facing precious metal to the mix. The front and rear of the large and dramatic teardrop-shaped lugs are polished, as are the pushers and the steel portion of the caseback. The pushers on the left side of the case mirror the teardrop shape of the lugs. The first ‘end-link’ is integrated into the case and has a brushed finish, as do the case sides and lugs, providing contrast to the large polished surfaces.
Forgoing the angular approach of other integrated bracelet timepieces, the flowing lines and circular bezel make for a much softer appearance. Far from a negative, it makes this integrated bracelet design easier to imagine in a wider range of circumstances, without it being an overtly outward statement piece while worn.
The dial
The major update for this model is the lightly pink-hued Arctic Rose dial. Reviving the colour as an 18th-century symbol of refinement and distinction for men, any lingering 20th-century sentiments of rose being overtly feminine should be removed. If one is still worried about a coloured dial being too much of a statement, those concerns should also be removed, as depending on the light, the dial can appear as a stark opaline white or an inviting warm rose hue. The Grain d’Orge guilloché pattern is hand-applied, adding texture to the dial that further assists with the tonal transformations that happen in the light.
The indices are hand-applied and are made of rhodium-plated 18k gold. The hour and minute hands are also rhodium-plated 18k gold, and the rattrapante minute hand is 18k rose gold, matching the reset pusher found on the crown. Those who bemoan excessive dial text should rejoice, as only a Parmigiani Fleurier logo can be found on the upper portion of the dial, and “Swiss Made” tucked away beneath the six o’clock indice.
The bracelet
The main aspect of this watch that leans towards the more sporting end of the watch spectrum is the integrated steel bracelet. Mirroring the case finishing, the centre links are brushed, and the outer portion of the outer links continues the polished finish that starts on the tear drop lugs, flowing seamlessly into each other. The inner portion of the outer links is also brushed, with this section tapering down until only the polished section remains as the bracelet tapers towards the butterfly push-button clasp. This finishing detail highlights the visual aspect of the tapering bracelet, reminiscent of lines and facets in car design that evoke an object in motion, even while standing still. When the clasp is closed, the bracelet features an embossed Parmigiani Fleurier logo.
The movement
Viewed through the sapphire case back, the in-house calibre PF052 powers the Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante. Reworked from the Rattrapante GMT, the PF052 is the world’s first minute rattrapante, measuring a svelte 4.9mm thin. With automatic winding achieved via a micro-rotor, this movement has 35 jewels, consists of 271 parts, measures 32mm in diameter, has a 48-hour power reserve, and operates at 21,600 bph. This highly decorated movement features côtes de Genève striping on the plates and balance shaft, bevelled edges and bridges, and perlage peaking out beneath the balance wheel and the Grain d’Orge guilloché 22k rose gold micro-rotor.
The minute rattrapante is utilised via the pushers on the nine o’clock side of the case and in-set of the crown. The pusher at ten o’clock advances the rose-gold rattrapante minute hand in one-minute increments, and the eight o’clock pusher does the same in five-minute increments. Once the time-telling rhodium-plated minute hand catches up with the rose gold minute hand, the demarcated interval has lapsed. The pusher, inset in the crown, resets the rose gold rattrapante hand and will continue to follow that minute hand, remaining out of sight when not in use. If you know you need to make an exit in 30 minutes, you press the eight o’clock pusher 6 times, advancing the rattrapante minute hand. Once you notice that your time is up, pressing the pusher in the crown aligns the two minute hands again as you make your way out the door.
The verdict
Creativity in watches can be manifested in a number of ways. The first that comes to mind is usually outlandish designs, then clever and unique engineering for common complications. Rarely do we see a brand come up with a unique solution to a function that exists elsewhere, especially when that function is more easily accomplished via a much simpler (and more cost-effective) method. When the goal is elegance in both appearance and interaction with the watch, a unique perspective is necessary to achieve this – less beach to boardroom and more waterfront brunch to black-tie affair, and still all business, Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Minute Rattrapante aims to provide a luxurious and elegant way to measure elapsed time in a wrist watch that matches a lifestyle less focused on sport and more focused on style, but still full of activity.
Following the Sand Grey dial released in 2023, the new Arctic Rose dial adds a more playful dial colour to the collection while maintaining versatility. This is one of those watches that clearly displays the personality of both Parmigiani Fleurier and whoever is wearing this watch, but does so quietly. You will notice it, but it isn’t shouting across the room; it is assuming its post while patiently waiting for expected company. The details are for you and those whom you invite into your inner circle. In short, it’s the epitome of stealth wealth.
