A sports watch, for moi? The glamour and gall of the Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy Edition
Buffy Acacia- Following on from the Kermit Edition, the Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy Edition matches the Muppet’s chic style.
- In a 34mm size, this is the smallest ProPilot X yet, but it keeps its 100-metre water resistance
- Miss Piggy’s face is visible from a small window in the stainless steel caseback.
If you’re looking for glamour, a highly durable pilot’s watch generally isn’t where I’d start looking. But Oris seems to have created an exception with the help of the world’s most divine swine – Miss Piggy. Star of The Muppets and mercurial lover of Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy had a milestone birthday last year, but a lady never reveals her age. She’s dabbled in business, Hollywood, fashion, and now she’s made a debut in watchmaking with the Oris ProPilot X Miss Piggy Edition. Kermit had his turn in the spotlight with Oris once before, but this year it’s Piggy’s time. If you find inspiration from her larger-than-life attitude, then this watch is for vous.
Within its 34mm case, the Miss Piggy Edition presents the smallest ProPilot X we’ve yet seen. The 39mm version was already quite compact, but being shrunken further really highlights the prettiness of the fine details. It’s also the first ProPilot X in stainless steel, carrying a brighter lustre than titanium. I wouldn’t use the words delicate or even sophisticated, because no amount of pink can truly soften the extreme facets of the ProPilot X. From the fanned bezel that emulates the look of a saw blade, to the harsh angles of the lugs and crown guards, it’s a high-octane watch for those with industrial tastes. There is a fair mix of brushing and polishing, allowing for dynamics in lighting as your wrist moves. This style extends down throughout the stainless steel bracelet, as well as the wedge shape clasp with a unique lift-to-open closure. It’s refreshing to see that none of the ProPilot X’s most interesting features have been sacrificed in this 34mm edition.
To call the dial of the ProPilot X Miss Piggy just “pink” would be a criminal understatement. It’s a shade of pink so hot that it could burn a hole through steel, and the velvety matte texture seems to capture a gentle, diffused glow from within, not too dissimilar from Miss Piggy’s felted skin. The hour markers take on a powerful pop of fuchsia to stay legible above the rest of the dial, without ruining its impact. The silver hands do stand out strongly, as does the lab-grown baguette-cut diamond marker at 12 o’clock — a symbol of Miss Piggy’s dedication to decadence. The Oris and ProPilot X logos themselves are ghostly, ensuring that nothing so garish as a brand name could be more important than Miss Piggy’s influence.
The Oris calibre 531 that powers the watch doesn’t seem to have been used much before, and is essentially a Sellita SW100 with Miss Piggy-specific modifications. It has a 42-hour power reserve and automatic winding, beating at 4Hz. The only peek into the movement from the solid caseback is a small window that reveals Miss Piggy’s porcine image when the winding rotor swings into position, enclosed in a lilac colour that evokes her stylish gloves. Although the movement may not be anything special, the workhorse nature fits in with the ProPilot X’s attitude as a whole. Along with the case’s 100-metre water resistance and a screw-down crown, this has to be one of the most extreme and capable watches to be paired with hyper-femininity.
