Of course, the first Tiffany-blue Nautilus to be spotted in the wild had to be on the wrist of Jay-Z
Ricardo SimeOn Tuesday, at a NeueHouse Hollywood screening of The Harder They Fall, Jay-Z was captured wearing the Hype Piece of the Year: the Tiffany-blue dialled Patek Philippe 5711 Nautilus. We knew such a sighting was bound to happen, but this is much sooner than expected. Jay-Z’s Tiffany Nautilus has broken the seal on the list of 170 people who were able to get one. Which begs the question, how did HOV become one of the few?
To answer that, we have to go back to September of this year when Jay-Z and wife Beyonce starred in an advert for Tiffany’s diamond collection. It was called About Love and celebrated their marriage, relationship and longing to be together. It was no surprise then that a month later, it was announced that both had become Tiffany & Co brand ambassadors. The campaign was so successful, that it was followed up by another advert called Date Night where daughter Blue Ivy crashes the party.
With all that being said, the road to Jay-Z’s Tiffany Nautilus seems pretty straight-forward. As ambassadors of one of the brands partnering on “the Tiffilus”, he probably had early dibs on the watch. Furthermore, as Zach Blass stated in his article, Tiffany was the sole partner responsible for allocating all 170 (minus the charity auction watch) timepieces.
At the end of the day, I’m not at all surprised that Jay-Z was selected to be one of the chosen few. It solidifies his relationship with the brand while also giving the watch some prime-time coverage (though I don’t really think it needs any more). And finally, Mr. Jay-Z is no horological slouch, so this will find some very fitting company in his watch box.
