Tudor finally breaks the ice with an all-new Northflag

The Tudor Northflag is back. First released in 2015, the original held an important place in the brand’s catalogue as the first Tudor powered by a mechanical movement developed and manufactured in-house. Its angular case, integrated bracelet and flashes of yellow also gave it a character unlike anything else in the catalogue. Tudor has now revived the Northflag with a new design, a GMT complication and Master Chronometer certification, preserving the clear identity that earned the original a devoted following.
The name reaches back to Tudor’s involvement in the British North Greenland Expedition during the 1950s. Watches issued to members of the expedition spent two years exposed to extreme cold on the Greenland ice sheet, helping establish Tudor’s reputation for dependable mechanical tool watches. The returning Northflag connects directly to that history, with its additional 24-hour display carrying a particular relevance in regions shaped by polar night and the midnight sun.
Its 40mm case is made of 316L stainless steel, measures 12.7mm thick, and is 48.8mm from lug to lug. A mixture of satin-brushed surfaces and polished chamfers defines the geometric form, which takes cues from the 1973 Tudor Ranger II. The fixed steel bezel follows the same finishing pattern, and a cone-shaped screw-down crown sits at three o’clock. Water resistance is certified to 100 metres. A domed sapphire crystal covers the dial, with a second sapphire crystal opening the caseback to reveal the movement.
The black dial keeps the Northflag immediately recognisable. Large Arabic numerals at 12 and six are joined by rectangular hour markers, all produced from monobloc luminous ceramic. The surrounding rehaut is angled at 45 degrees and carries a full 24-hour scale, giving the dial useful depth and a clear track for the yellow GMT hand.
That hand features the arrow-shaped profile associated with the Northflag, accompanied by a broad-arrow hour hand, a baton minute hand, and an angular seconds hand. Yellow accents appear across the GMT display, seconds hand, rehaut and dial text, bringing energy to an otherwise tightly controlled palette. But interestingly, and potentially controversially, there’s no power reserve indicator like the previous model.
Power comes from Tudor’s automatic manufacture calibre MT5652-U. The integrated GMT movement displays local time, a second time zone, running seconds and the date. A bidirectional winding system feeds a METAS-certified power reserve of 65 hours. The calibre runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and uses a silicon balance spring with a variable-inertia balance secured beneath a traversing bridge. COSC and METAS certification place the completed watch within a daily tolerance of 0/+5 seconds. Testing also covers operation in magnetic fields of 15,000 gauss, water resistance and power reserve. The open caseback provides a view of the tungsten monobloc rotor, radial laser decoration and the alternating sand-blasted and polished surfaces across the bridges and mainplate.
An integrated two-link bracelet continues the lines of the case. It is predominantly brushed, with polished chamfers adding definition along the links. Tudor’s T-fit clasp offers five tool-free adjustment positions across an 8mm range, and ceramic ball bearings give the closure a smooth, secure action.
The new Northflag arrives as one of Tudor’s most distinctive modern designs, now equipped with a highly practical GMT function and the brand’s current technical standard. Its 40mm proportions, architectural steel construction and emphatic yellow details give the collection a clear identity from every angle. At CHF 4,500, the Northflag returns with a strong specification and a well-defined place in Tudor’s range.
