The new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon is the epitome of sporty luxury

  • The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon has received a sequel, now with a Milano blue dial.
  • The platinum case leans into a sense of stealth wealth, weighing 34% more than 18k gold.
  • A 100m water resistance rating makes this a true platinum sports watch.

Parmigiani Fleurier’s launch of the Tonda PF range in 2021 saw an immediate effect, broadening the appeal of the brand and drawing much more attention to their incredible craftsmanship and tasteful design. As purveyors of “stealth wealth”, they know how to effortlessly ride the line of luxury that you can see without appearing even remotely gaudy. The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon was released last year with a sophisticated silver dial, however for 2023’s Watches & Wonders the model has returned in a spry Milano blue that begs you to wear it every day.

Platinum is definitely the pinnacle of understated luxury materials, as to the untrained eye it may just appear to be stainless steel. While the white metal lustre may give a visual impression of platinum, the most notable difference will be the heft on-wrist as platinum is approximately 34% heavier than 18k gold. The 42mm case is full of Parmigiani Fleurier character, such as the semi-detached lugs, the wide integrated bracelet, and the knurled bezel which adds a deep mix of industrial dressiness.

Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon case side

The dial of the new Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Flying Tourbillon gives you as much room as possible to pour over the Milano blue colour, neatly playing into the blue-dial, integrated bracket watch category. The texture is a finely grained matte one that softly diffuses the light, and it is only interrupted by the applied PF logo, and the asymmetrical flying tourbillon display at 7 o’clock. Even the hands give you more space to view the dial, as their delta shape has been skeletonised. The tourbillon features a sharp blue hand and a bright golden balance wheel that does give away some of the watch’s true status, and the view from behind is far from being stealthy. The calibre PF517 is adorned with beautiful concentric Côtes de Genève, and the solid 950 platinum micro-rotor automatically winds the watch with a barleycorn guilloché pattern. Operating at 3Hz, the movement provides 48 hours of power reserve.
