More diamonds, more refinement, more options: The new IWC Portofino Automatic 37
Borna BošnjakThe IWC Portofino Automatic 37 has been a staple in the Schaffhausen watchmaker’s collection since 2014, largely targeted at their female audience. The new Portofino 37 models continue the feminine touches found in the original, with subtle design changes and technological improvements. This includes the introduction of a manufacture calibre, enhanced diamond setting and larger diamonds, as well as a move towards better sustainability with traceable calfskin straps.
IWC Portofino Automatic 37
The simple three-hander with date has always been a handsome offering by IWC. Slim and elegant at 37mm in diameter and with a thickness of 9.4mm, all the watches are set with a minimum of 12 diamonds to go along with the stick indices. Elegant feuille hands are paired with Roman numerals at 6 and 12 o’clock for added visual interest to the dial, which is otherwise very simple.
IWC is refreshing the Portofino Automatic 37 in no less than six different renditions, differing in dial colour and case material. It’s no surprise that alongside toned-down anthracites, whites and champagnes, IWC decided on a lush green – it’s still the colour to have, after all. The brand also tweaked the design of the rounded, polished bezels to better accommodate diamond-setting. These models feature 60 diamonds on the case, and an additional 12 on the dial, totalling 1.12 carats. A quick-release system is applied to all the models, including the Moon Phase, with a small tool supplied with every watch.
The IWC Calibre 32111 powers the Portofino 37, complete with its pawl winding system and five-day power reserve. As expected from a watch of this calibre (pun intended), the movement is handsomely decorated with circular striping, gold-plated rotor and blued screws.

IWC Portofino Automatic Moon Phase 37
If the Portofino Automatic is a little too simple for you, IWC has also re-hashed the Portofino Automatic Moon Phase. The solid gold moon phase disc neatly nestles in between 11 o’clock and 1 o’clock, with the moon and stars matched to the colour of the hands and indices.
Owing to the inclusion of a moonphase module on top of the Calibre 32000-family movement for the first time, the case size grows very slightly in diameter, to 37.1mm. The notable size increase is in thickness, which now sits at 11.3mm, which is still relatively slim considering the complication.
The Calibre 32800 retains the same specifications as the Automatic 37, with a five-day power reserve. The moonphase is accurate to 122 years due to modifications IWC has made to the wheel train, and can be easily adjusted using the crown.
