MICRO MONDAYS: The Mancheront Pacer delivers an ingenious twist on the Pulsometer function
Ricardo SimeIt’s easy to forget that this hobby we love had its origins in life-changing situations. These watches we wear were once more than just physical expressions of our stylistic tastes. They helped plot our courses over land and sea. They enabled some of the bravest people of a generation to rendezvous for war-time missions at the right place and time. And they also helped physicians to diagnose health conditions by measuring a patient’s heart or pulse rate. It’s this last function that this watch brings to life with an intriguing twist. Say hello to the Mancheront Pacer.
Mancheront is an independent watch brand started in 2017 and based out of Sydney. The Mancheront Pacer is their initial offering and is a piece that is foundationally a sports watch. This is seen in a stainless-steel case that has curves and a shape reminiscent of that oh-so-popular diver, the Rolex Submariner. Thus it’s of no surprise that the measurements here are quite appealing with the Pacer’s case offering a 39.5mm diameter. This is accompanied by a 48mm lug-to-lug and a svelte thickness of only 13.6mm. A thickness, I might add, that includes the height of the underside AR-coated, flat sapphire crystal.
In terms of finishes, the watch makes use of multiple types. The top part of the case is fully brushed, giving the watch a sporty vibe. However, make your way to the sides and you’re met with mirror polishing that should allow it to catch just the right amount of sunlight. The polishing continues to the screw-down crown, which seals the case, aiding it in achieving 100 metres (300ft) of water resistance.
Making our way back to the front of the watch, we are presented with its main function. To understand it, we must start with the bezel, which at 41mm is slightly wider than the case. That bezel features a beautiful wreath design, which should allow for a sure grip as you make use of the Pulsations scale printed on its stainless-steel insert.
Well, on the Pacer, you don’t need one.
In designing the Pacer, Mancheront created a watch with a bi-directional bezel that can be used as a pulsometer. A pulsometer allows the wearer, be it a physician or runner, to measure their heart rate. Unlike a chronograph (which can get expensive) or a watch with the pulsometer scale on the dial (which requires the wearer to wait until the seconds hand hits 12), the bezel on the Mancheront Pacer allows you to start measuring immediately. To do this, simply rotate the triangle on the bezel to a point ahead of the seconds hand.
