Watch enthusiasts, including myself, often search for watches with specific expectations. For example, I often find myself looking at dive watches with unnecessary amounts of water resistance. And there is nothing wrong with that. Every one of us has specific watches that excite us, however, by only focusing on one or two categories, for example, diver’s and pilot’s watches, it’s easy to miss good value all-rounders. The Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day Date 41mm is exactly that. Whether you have multiple watches and want something for those mornings when you are not sure which of your timepieces will fit the day’s events, or you just want one watch that does it all, or you perhaps want to gift someone a watch – sometimes you’ll seek a daily wearer. In which case, a classic crowd-pleaser, like the Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day Date 41mm is a good option. Just like with the Pontos Chronograph, the brand is making subtle changes to the collection. There are no big innovations here, but these little changes make an everyday watch stand out.
As with many new releases, they focused on the dial. One thing already sets apart the Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day Date 41mm from other watches in this category. Its minute track is positioned inside the hour markers rather than hugging the edge of the dial. With the three new dial variants, this inner ring is now differently coloured than the rest of the dial. Slightly recessed, it is complete with the Maurice Lacroix text and printed lines. All three hands roughly follow the shape of the applied hour markers, either in silver or rose gold. The hour hand just about touches the mentioned inner ring, while the minute and seconds hands are just the perfect lengths, making the overall feeling coherent. The three new versions are a black dial with silver markers and a silver minute track, a white one with a black minute track and rose gold markers, and finally, an entirely new anthracite dial with rose gold markers and minute track. All feature a sunray effect, most noticeable on the grey one. As the collection’s name would suggest, each dial features a separate day and date display.
The case is what remained untouched. It measures 41 millimetres across and has a thickness of 11 millimetres. Both hit a sweet spot for casual watches. Although not full-blown crown guards, the added material on the right side makes the shape stand out. The Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day Date 41mm shares the same turbine-like crown as the chronograph edition. Another thing in common are the stepped lugs with alternating finishes. They are brushed atop and polished on the lower step. A slightly angled, polished, circular bezel wraps the domed sapphire crystal. Despite its classical appearance, the watch features 100 metres of water resistance, which makes it perfect for everyday wear. Under the sapphire caseback is the calibre ML143. It is essentially a Sellita with Côtes de Genève and colimaçonnage decoration, along with a signed rotor. Its 38-hour power reserve is something that could use an upgrade.
While the Maurice Lacroix Pontos Day Date 41mm could at first seem like a more elegant watch, which it is indeed, it can be great for an everyday piece. Buyers have a choice between a faux alligator leather strap and a three-link bracelet. On the steel bracelet, it can accompany any casual outfit, while the strap fits more formal occasions. Both are easily swapped due to the Easy Strap Exchange System.
