Loki masters time, but what watches do Tom Hiddleston and the Marvel Cinematic Universe cast actually wear?

Zach Blass

Editor’s Note: In honour of Loki mastering time in the season two finale of his eponymous show, and the release of The Marvels, we decided to revisit and update our favourite watches worn by The Avengers cast and other actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like their roles in the films, the spectrum of watches is diverse, ranging from top-tier brands like Patek Philippe and Rolex to smaller independents like Urwerk.

The Avengers

Tom Hiddleston – Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph

Tom Hiddleston Hublot

Tom Hiddleston, in reality, goes without a watch more often than not. However, he has been spotted at more formal events wearing a variety of watches from Tissot, Cartier, and Montblanc. One of his latest watch spots was when he attended a special screening last year armed with a Hublot Classic Fusion Chronograph with a 42mm titanium case, matching titanium bracelet, and versatile sunburst blue dial. A Hublot/Hiddleston matchup does not seem like a very fitting matchup at first, but I think it would look great if he wore the rather recently released Classic Fusion in yellow gold that paid tribute to the original design.

Owen Wilson – Rolex Submariner Date ‘Kermit’ ref. 16610LV

Owen Wilson Rolex

Owen Wilson, who stars alongside Tom Hiddleston in the Disney+ series Loki as TVA timekeeper Mobius, was photographed at a recent Juventus training session in California taking a selfie with fans in the stands. As he tries to best to orient his huge phone/tablet for a selfie, his Rolex Submariner Date ‘Kermit’ ref. 16610LV can be seen in full view. The distinct green bezel was an immediate tell, and upon zooming in on the image it becomes clearer it is the 16610LV with a green aluminium bezel rather than the modern 126610LV ‘Cermit’ with a ceramic bezel.

Benedict Cumberbatch – Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox

Benedict Cumberbatch Jaeger LeCoultre

Of course, on-screen Dr. Strange wears a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra Thin Perpetual ref. 130842J that’s far more than just set dressing – rather, it’s an integral part of the character’s story. Off-screen, however, Benedict Cumberbatch wears a variety of watches, including smartwatches – but at Wimbledon this past July, he aptly chose to pair a Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox with his dapper blue suit. Hopefully, the alarm complication was not set to go off during the matches, that would have been an awkward moment in the stands leaving him wishing he had the time stone to go back in time.

Robert Downey Jr. – Urwerk UR-110RG

The Avengers

Robert Downey Jr. has a very eclectic and compelling watch collection with too many pieces to list in this story. But if there is any watch that embodies the spirit of genius billionaire Tony Stark it is a creation from Urwerk  – watches known for their highly futuristic and technical aesthetics. This UR-110RG was hand-selected by Robert Downey Jr. to be worn in Spiderman: Homecoming and was later auctioned off for charity.

Chris Hemsworth – Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Self-winding Chronograph ref. 26331OR.OO.1220OR.01

Former TAG Heuer ambassador Chris Hemsworth dropped the hammer when he was caught partying wearing an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Self-winding Chronograph ref. 26331OR.OO.1220OR.01. Perhaps Chris was competing with his brother Liam, who can also be seen in the photo wearing a rose gold Rolex Daytona ref. 116505. For more on Chris’ growing watch collection, you should check out our exhaustive guide to the big man’s collection.

Taika Waititi – Doxa SUB 1200T

Taika Waititi, aside from being both an actor and director within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is also a certified watch geek. And, as Borna points out in a dedicated overview of Waititi’s collection, it is always exciting to see a Doxa on a famous wrist as it generally points to a true enthusiast. Though the 1200T is discontinued, its spiritual successor, the SUB 300T, is available – courtesy of the T+T Shop.

Kumail Nanjiani – Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5167R

Hot Ones

We once covered Kumail’s AP flex in the Marvel film Eternals, but one watch the actor notably wears often from his own personal collection is the Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5167R. Of all the watches in this list, this is likely the one I would want to add to my collection the most. The Aquanaut is such a casual flex, even in rose gold, and it carries such a versatile aesthetic – both formal and functional.

Dave Bautista – Panerai Luminor Marina ref. OP 6580 PAM140 (Limited Edition of 400 pieces.)

Among the list of men I would never want to get into the ring with, Dave Bautista ranks right at the top. Previously known for pummelling his WWE opponents with a Bautista Bomb, the former professional wrestler made the jump to Hollywood, landing the role of Drax the Destroyer in the Guardians of the Galaxy series. When it comes to his tree-trunk wrists, Bautista has been spotted wearing a yellow-gold Panerai Luminor Marina ref. OP 6580 PAM140, the 44mm diver that leverages the storied Italian brand’s robust iconic framework in a precious metal befitting of a Hollywood superstar.

Chris Pratt – Rolex Daytona ref. 116500LN with a white dial

Celebrities are equally susceptible to Daytonamania, and on The Ellen Show Chris Pratt was spotted wearing the in-demand Rolex Daytona ref. 116500LN with a white dial, a watch with a secondhand premium that continues to rocket. Andrew seems to think Pratt’s wrist dwarfs the 40mm watch, but I vehemently disagree – perhaps due to the fact I want to erase any incentive for the Crown to scale up the coveted chronograph.

Tom Holland – Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5167/R (among others)

The Avengers

Off the silver screen, your friendly neighbourhood Spiderman, Tom Holland, like Kumail Nanjiani, is known to sport a Patek Philippe Aquanaut on his wrist – a watch also notably worn by fellow Brit and musical legend Sir Paul McCartney. Commonly on the red carpet, he can be seen wearing his 5167/R – a beautiful rose and chocolatey take on Patek’s most casual collection. Holland loves the Aquanaut so much that he has also been seen wearing the 5168G in a more stealthy white gold case with an eye-catching midnight blue dial. If the Aquanaut is not your bag, he’s also been recently spotted wearing the new Rolex Submariner Kermit. The moral of the story: Tom Holland, while the youngest Avengers star, has a serious watch collection.

Chris Evans – IWC Portugieser Chronograph ref. IW371610

The Avengers

Recently spotted on the wrist of Adrien Brody, the man with “America’s ass” also boasts the sporty yet elegant IWC Portugieser Chronograph ref. IW371610. The watch really suits Chris Evans. As someone who is athletic but graceful, Evans and the IWC Portugieser Chronograph ref. IW371610 are a perfect pairing. He has also been found wearing other IWC references such as the Portofino, as well as pieces from fellow Richemont brand Montblanc.

Paul Rudd – Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox

The Avengers

Benedict Cumberbatch, a.k.a Doctor Strange, is a JLC ambassador, so we know he rocks their pieces on and off screen. But lovable comedic actor Paul Rudd has been known to be a JLC fan as well – even favouring the model Cumberbatch wore recently to Wimbledon. He transitioned to the superhero world to assume the role of Ant-Man, bringing along his wit and charm to nail the part. He has certainly come a long way since being Phoebe’s girlfriend in Friends. One JLC watch Rudd has been captured wearing is the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox, outfitted on a rubber strap that meets flush to the case. It is yet another instance where the watch really suits the man wearing it, fun on the surface while technically faceted beneath. Rudd has also been spotted rocking some Grand Seikos in the past, too.

Mark Ruffalo – Harry Winston Midnight Retrograde Second Automatic 42mm

Image: Robb Report

No, unfortunately, Mark Ruffalo has not been photographed wearing the Rolex Submariner Hulk – that would just be too good to be true. But while presenting at the Oscars, Ruffalo was seen wearing a Harry Winston Midnight Retrograde Second Automatic 42mm with a silver-toned dial. The muted aesthetic is a perfect pairing for formalwear but is livened up a bit thanks to the retrograde seconds complication.

Scarlett Johansson – Rolex Lady-Datejust 28

Image: SuperWatchMan

Saving the best for last, the Black Widow superstar has been caught wearing a yellow Rolesor Rolex Lady-Datejust ref. 279173 with a champagne dial outfitted with diamond hour indices. While the reference does not follow my golden Datejust rule of fluted bezel/jubilee bracelet and smooth/oyster, the fluted bezel works when you consider the fact that diamonds are present on the dial. The classic reference looks right at home on Johansson’s wrist and its versatile aesthetic and robust build makes it capable of being worn in any setting.
