In the Metal: Marcus explores $680,000 worth of Laurent Ferrier

Zach Blass

The In the Metal series typically showcases the behind-the-scenes of Marcus’ world building for watch shoots, allowing you to be a fly on the wall for (in my opinion), the Martin Scorsese of horological cinematography. This episode of In the Metal is a bit more literal, where Marcus discovers a brand he is less familiar with for the first time. And it’s not just one watch, rather an astounding $680,000 worth of Laurent Ferrier in one go.

After Marcus received a high-security, wire-secured delivery from a watch brand, his Spidey senses began to tingle, and he invited me to watch him open the package and discover what was inside. We were surprised to see not one, but two boxes within. To our major surprise, we didn’t just have one watch. There was a diverse roster of nine watches from high-end independent watchmaker Laurent Ferrier. While Marcus had encountered Monochrome founder Frank Geelen’s smouldering Laurent Ferrier Sport Auto, he did not necessarily have the full low-down on the brand. This is where I came in.

I by no means have a PhD in all things Laurent Ferrier, but together Marcus and I discuss the design, craftsmanship, and pricing of the watches, as well as Laurent Ferrier’s background – his origins in racing, and as a watchmaker for Patek Philippe before starting his namesake brand in 2009. Our conversation highlights the appeal of Laurent Ferrier as a brand for collectors looking for under-the-radar watches – whether more classic or sporty in aesthetic. We explore the different models, standout elements, and lust over their craftsmanship and attention to movement finishing in real time, touching on the pricing of these luxury watches and the concept of value in the luxury market.
