If you’ve been following Maen over the last few years, you’ll know the 70s-inspired Manhattan has grown to become the brand’s flagship collection. It’s evolved surprisingly quickly, spanning new case sizes. dial designs, and more recently, an ultra-thin, hand-wound variant that elevates the collection to an even more luxurious level. Now, Maen is bringing some of those concepts together to launch its new Boutique Exclusives programme. The first release in this new programme pairs the Manhattan 37 Ultra-Thin with a delicious blue Côtes de Genève fumé dial, creating a retailer-exclusive edition that will first be available via a 24-hour online launch before reaching selected retail partners, including the Time+Tide Watch Discovery Studio in New York City.
The Manhattan 37’s case is probably one of the most distinctive out there in terms of integrated bracelet designs. It measures 37mm across, and being the “Ultra-Thin” variant, sits just 7.1mm tall, living up to its name. The Ultra-Thin model retains the angular haunches of the larger model, with a faceted, octagonal bezel atop the sharply brushed stainless steel case, which features carefully polished bevels. With the flat sapphire crystal helping to provide 100 metres of water resistance, the integrated bracelet design combined with the compact dimensions strikes a good balance between sporty and dressy, making it a very compelling everyday wear for most wrist sizes.
While the Ultra-Thin collection debuted with a hammered, Tuscan-style dial, this Boutique Exclusive takes a different route. The blue Côtes de Genève fumé dial is extremely close to a similar dial in the Manhattan 37 family, specifically the thicker automatic variant. The dial pairs deep blue, metallic tones with a vertically striped finish that catches the light from every angle, and is complemented by beautifully polished syringe-style hands and straight baton hour markers. This is all framed by a slightly oversized printed minute track, which helps ensure the Manhattan remains easy to read at a glance, especially due to the unusually shaped dial.
Powering the watch is the manually wound La Joux-Perret D100 calibre. Measuring just 2.5mm thick, the Swiss-made calibre is a major contributor to the Ultra-Thin’s slender profile while still delivering a healthy 50-hour power reserve, beating at 21,600 Vph. Maen also gives owners a full view of the movement through a sapphire exhibition caseback, showcasing the blued screws and Côtes de Genève finishing, which contrasts with the dial, as it’s machined in the opposite direction. Usually, this model has a small seconds register at this size; however, for the Boutique Exclusives model, it’s gone, making this variant a simple, clean two-hander.
Blending into the case is Maen’s integrated stainless-steel bracelet seen on the other Manhattan models, which shares the same angular design language as the case, and tapers considerably from 24mm to 16mm at the clasp. Fully brushed for a cohesive look, the three-link bracelet helps reinforce the Manhattan’s distinctly sporty, angular appearance. It’s secured by a 316L stainless steel butterfly clasp, finished with a Maen logo.
Overall, it’s cool to see Maen pushing the Ultra-Thin ahead with a different dial design, and the Côtes de Genève style suits the Ultra-Thin’s personality perfectly. The blue dial is luxurious, and almost has a vague hint of vintage Patek about it, which, when presented on a mechanical watch that is just 7.1mm thin, makes the Manhattan an interesting prospect indeed. Throw in the fact that it’s a Boutique Exclusive piece, and it’s unlikely you’re going to bump into many of these at your local watch meet.
