Longines brings the PrimaLuna bang up to date with a classy, all-new design
Tom Austin- Longines has redesigned its successful PrimaLuna collection, thoughtfully introducing a larger, curvier case design while retaining a classic, timeless look.
- The collection is being rolled out from September 2025, and once fully released, it will consist of 23 references spanning across 34mm and 30mm case sizes, with automatic and quartz options.
- There is a wide range of dial variations on offer, including blue and white mother-of-pearl or sunray silver, along with gem-set and bi-metal alternatives.
Ladies’ watches and their position in the market are slowly evolving. While the enthusiasts’ argument persists that gendered watches are unnecessary, it’s undeniable that to the broader audience, smaller, feminine pieces remain extremely popular. The Longines PrimaLuna is a ladies’ collection that has been with us since 2009, and since then has gone on to become one of the brand’s best-selling models.
For 2025, Longines has reimagined the collection, making subtle tweaks to update the watch and add a slightly more contemporary touch, while retaining the classic, timeless look that has made the collection so appreciated. With the help of long-time Longines Ambassador Jennifer Lawrence posing with the new watches, the new PrimaLuna collection is a subtle re-interpretation of the brand’s feminine-focused line.
The overall design of the latest watch very much remains a PrimaLuna, but the most significant difference with the new model is the case. The previous model had distinctive, classical, narrow lugs – which look pretty old-fashioned by today’s standards. As this lug design is an important design aspect of the PrimaLuna, Longines have chosen to cleverly retain the old silhouette of the narrow 8mm lugs on the new model, while incorporating a wider design at each end of the case. The result is a more cohesive look, with a wider transition into the bracelet, giving the watch a more contemporary feel.
Despite the larger proportions and an 11.6mm thickness, the case size remains fairly traditional, with the watch initially being available in 34mm guise, and a smaller 30mm option arriving later in the year. Throughout the range, the case comes in polished stainless steel, with several possibilities spanning bi-metal 18k rose or yellow gold, or gem-set with blue sapphires or white diamonds. It’s not just about looks; features like the anti-reflective coating on the sapphire crystal, an exhibition caseback, and 30 meters of water resistance make it practical yet elegant everyday wear.
The dials, while varied across the collection, are still very traditional and indeed not too daring. Except for some colour and material options, they’re very similar to those of the previous model, so it’s clear what area of the market Longines is still targeting here. The main body of the collection centres around two variations: a standard 3-handed, time-and-date-only version, and a model with a moonphase and date residing in a subdial at 6 o’clock. These models are available across a layered sunray silver dial, with blue Roman numerals, or a selection of white, green or blue mother-of-pearl dials that are finished with diamond hour markers.
It’s great to see Longines stick with an automatic mechanical movement for the main PrimaLuna lineup, and the one featured in the new model is a clear leap ahead in terms of specification over the old model. Visible through the exhibition caseback, the ETA A31.L91-based Longines calibre L899.5 features a 72-hour power reserve, a Silicium balance spring and improved anti-magnetic properties. It beats at 25,200 vph (3.5 Hz), which is slightly slower than the 4Hz of the previous model, but presumably this offers improved longevity and helps towards that longer, more convenient power reserve.
Alongside the gilt-decorated automatic 34mm model, Longines is nearly ready to launch a smaller 30mm quartz-driven model. This makes sense from an affordability standpoint and makes the collection a versatile option for those who don’t want to worry about maintenance or winding. The quartz model is poised to release later this December.
As we mentioned earlier, the new case proportions now blend well with the bracelet, representing a solid improvement over the previous models’ more classical, separated design. The stainless steel five-link bracelet has been redesigned to look less chunky and comes with a neat triple-folding safety clasp to make sure everything stays in place. Alongside the bracelet, there are some more traditional-looking leather strap options, such as blue, red or burgundy alligator. These also come equipped with triple folding clasps, which is unusual for watches of this size, and further supports the notion that Longines likes to think about every last detail.
