LIST: Six watches for Father’s Day

Felix Scholz

Father’s Day is quickly approaching, and what better gift than the gift of time? If by ‘time’ you think we’re talking about spending the day together, you’re spot on. Then again, if you really want to let him know how much you love him, why not take that notion of time a step further, and say it with a watch? Here are our top six dad-appropriate options.

Baume & Mercier Clifton GMT

Baume & Mercier is all about celebrating special moments in life – and saying thanks to your dad on Father’s Day certainly fits the bill. While pretty much any Baume & Mercier is fit for purpose, we’d go something from the Clifton line (like the GMT). Its good looks are reminiscent of another era. Just like your dad.

Bell & Ross BR03-92 Military Type

If this were the sort of list that broke down into categories like ‘Sports Dad’ or ‘BBQ Dad’ the Bell & Ross BR03-92 Military Type would be for ‘Tough Dad.‘ And while this isn’t that sort of list, there’s no denying this ceramic Bell & Ross can stand up to the rigours of modern parenthood.

A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down

OK – we’ve got to be straight with you. The main reason this Lange made the list is so we can make a pun about it being the ‘Dadograph.’ But awesome terrible wordplay aside, if you’re getting your old man a Datograph (or any Lange, really) you clearly think he’s the world’s best father, because this is an top-notch timepiece, powered by one of the most beautiful chronograph movements ever made.

A Rolex from the year he was born

Sure it’s a cliché, but who cares when it’s a good one. Rolex timepieces are famous for getting better with age, just like fine wines (and fathers). A smart twist on this theme is to get your dad a Rolex from the year you were born – and then hopefully he’ll take the hint and get you one from the year he was born. Everyone wins!

IWC Pilot Mark XVIII

If your father is the kind of guy who appreciates quality but prefers not to flash it around, you can’t go past an IWC Pilot Mark XVII. With a design based on a classic pilot’s watch, this is simple, sturdy, understated timepiece. It’s perfect for a dad who just wants a good watch that tells the time – and the date is a bonus.

Girard-Perregaux 1966 Large Date and moon

1966 was a good year – and if your dad is 49 it was a very good year. The Girard-Perregaux 1966 is a more than suitable tribute to the year – a pared back gold dress watch with a moonphase and a big date complication. (Especially convenient if your father’s eyes ain’t what they used to be).
