The Krayon Anyday can act as a monthly planner on your wrist
Buffy Acacia- The Krayon Anyday is the brand’s third and most practical watch, doubling as a monthly planner.
- The ingenious complication is powered by the in-house Calibre C032, with 378 components.
- The calendar functions only require manual adjustment 5 times per year, which can be performed simply through the crown.
One of the key paths to success in watchmaking is to solve problems nobody has, such as the accuracy benefits of a tourbillon, the water resistance of a 1,000m diver, or the slenderness of a 2mm Piaget. Occasionally, a brand will come along that can create something genuinely useful, and that’s exactly what Krayon does. In the case of the new Krayon Anyday, you can coordinate your month’s plans just by glancing at your wrist thanks to an ingenious new dial display. Plus, it’s just a gorgeous watch in its own right.
As a team of just 12 watchmakers led by Rémi Maillat, Krayon is a high-end independent with all the energy and ingenuity of a young microbrand. It’s only been around for about 7 years, and in that time it has only released two watch collections and a couple of one-off pieces. That is, up until now. The Anyday is an entirely new creation from Krayon, and while the naming scheme may be a little confusing between the Anyday, Anywhere and Everywhere, it’s Krayon’s most practical watch yet. It doesn’t prioritise practicality too far above beauty, though, keeping a healthy balance of both.
The main utility comes from the dial’s 31-day perimeter, with the numerals cut out of a speckled blue ring. Beneath the ring is a wheel that highlights weekend dates in silver, allowing you to easily see which weekdays the dates fall upon. A rotating crescent moon points out the current date, and you can use all of that information as a monthly planner.
Of course, you won’t be able to take notes or mark appointments directly on your watch, but having the weeks laid out in this way is a fantastic tool for mental notes and generally keeping track of the month ahead. Balancing out the date wheel, there are also four dots that can represent the first days of the following month. The Krayon Calibre C032 automatically adjusts the days of the week as the month ticks over, although you will need to adjust it manually whenever the month doesn’t have 31 days.
It achieves this through two cams, one which changes the weekday at midnight and another which moves the date each day and month. Whenever you need to intervene, you can adjust everything easily from the crown, as well as hand-wind the 72-hour power reserve. The large plates of the movement are also decorated with hypnotic waves, like sand on the sea floor.
The case of the watch is made from 18k white gold, and it is very tastefully done. The main case is smooth with a concave bezel, and the concave steps on the lugs also add nice, refined detail. It’s 39mm in diameter, hitting a perfect middle ground between presence and versatility, while the 9.5mm thickness ensures great wearability. The dial provides a wonderful variety of textures, too. There’s the date ring reminiscent of a speckled robin’s egg and a small ring around that one with an incredibly vivid sunburst finish.
A darker blue tone is reserved for the more subtle sunburst of the dial, embedded with a guilloché pattern of Krayon’s ‘Y’ logo. Trapezoidal applied hour markers stand quite proud from the dial, giving the whole watch a lot of depth despite its slender profile.
