Hublot didn’t disappoint at Watches & Wonders delivering everything from a blaze of diamonds, to the brightest yellow watch I have ever seen. Apart from strapping the actual sun to your wrist, the Hublot Big Bang Unico Yellow Magic is flash enough to make the grumpiest old codger smile. But aside from a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from the glare, what exactly do you match it up with?

Well, to celebrate this bright yellow burst of horology, consider this Time+Tide’s contribution to the world of fashion, with our in-house designed Nike Waffle One through Nike By You, a brilliant way to find exactly the right kicks. Choose a favourite Nike model, then customise it to your own taste, from downplayed elegance to a barrage of colours.

I did spend a wastefully long time working through everything from mesh, to swoosh to heel detail, from middle to main sole. But what I discovered in the process is that the Nike Waffle One is a softly comfortable sneaker that makes a great pairing with the Hublot Big Bang Unico Yellow Magic . It’s cool enough to be worn with shorts and a t-shirt, or as a bold contrast to more formal wear. And if you have a Yellow Magic on your wrist, I suspect you won’t be timid. My favourite detail? The mesh side, alluding to the sapphire dial on the Hublot with its see-through charm.

It took a full four years of development for Hublot to produce the brightly coloured, hard-wearing ceramic without burning the pigment in the process. And as we’ve been used to seeing from Hublot, this vividly coloured ceramic is another first. After their 2018 red version and later blue,  the Swiss maison now has close to a full catalogue of tasty primary colours, tough as nails and flashy as hell.

On its comfortable striated soft rubber, the gloss yellow case has a great contrast in the black mid-case, classic Hublot screws, and skeletonised dial. But it’s still a very legible chronograph, powered by the column wheel Unico HUB1280 self-winding calibre. Cool sports flashiness aside, the Unico movement means business, with its flyback chronograph feature and long 72 hour power reserve.  The bright yellow piece of wrist-flash is water resistant to 100 metres, just remember to take off the custom Nikes before diving in.

Hublot doesn’t do svelte or slim vintage, which might be exactly why we love their brash tool watches, but this is a good mid-size 42mm in diameter with a thickness of 14.5mm.  Nikes aside, whatever you wear the Hublot Big Bang Yellow Magic with, you’ll outshine all the other wristwear in the vicinity. Shy it ain’t.
