Is it okay to wear a diamond-encrusted watch to tie your hair back?

Human creativity truly knows almost no bounds. Want proof? Check out this guy wearing a completely diamond encrusted watch as a scrunchie in the club, neatly pulling back his impressive mane of dreadlocks. Really, given the almost endless number of products specifically designed to manage hair, using an iced-out wristwatch is genuinely thinking outside the box. But what is the watch in question and more importantly, should you try it yourself?

At first glance, the watch gives the impression of a diamond-set Patek Philippe Nautilus. Perhaps a famed factory diamond set ref. 5719, or more simply a ref. 5711 with aftermarket diamonds?

A Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5719 on the left, next to a ref. 5711 that has been fitted with aftermarket diamonds.

Unfortunately neither, as the watch wrapped around the gentleman’s hair is clearly yellow-gold in colour, and neither the ref. 5719 or ref. 5711 are made in yellow gold on a bracelet. The watch clearly isn’t from Patek Philippe, with a bezel that is too round, a sub seconds register at 6 o’clock and bracelet links that are a little too angular to be from the Genevan watchmaker.

Without many leads to go on, I googled “iced out rapper watch” and immediately came across a site selling “Hip hop iced out lab diamond luxury watch”, which actually looks to be the same watch, or at least a close relative of the watch in question. It’s also slightly more affordable than a Patek Philippe ref. 5719 too, costing just $34.

So should you wear a $34 watch that looks a little bit like a Patek Philippe ref. 5719 as a hair tie the next time you go to the club? Why not? It’s 2021, we’re surviving a pandemic and as an example of the ingenuity of our species, it’s a pretty funny one. But while it is a great emergency option to keep your hair out of your eyes, it turns out someone else has had a similar idea.

If bling isn’t your thing and you’re more of an Apple Watch kind of person, this is the option for you. So the next time you’re hunting for a scrunchie, remember this man and his unbridled creativity as you source solutions. Check out the full TikTok video here.
