INTRODUCING: The Tutima Patria Small Second Blue & Gold
Fergus NashWith its name first appearing on watches as early as 1927, Tutima have had a tumultuous yet resilient history. You may not be as familiar with them as some other German watchmakers, but they nonetheless excel in all corners. This latest release for the brand is quite a unique take on a traditional dress watch, conforming to all of the “rules” while retaining distinct personality. The Tutima Patria Small Second Blue & Gold presents robust character with delicacy in a way that few watches can.
The case of the Tutima Patria is where it differs most from the classical dress watch formula, with a fairly beefy 43mm diameter and rather stout lugs. The polished bezel is quite pronounced too, forming a solid and comforting frame around the dial. The crown, which begins as an onion shape then angles sharply into a cropped end, is guarded by acute extensions of the asymmetrical case. It’s this attention to detail which allows Tutima to execute these typically sports-oriented features into a watch that screams formality. The 18k rose gold heightens the sense of luxury without feeling as overbearing as yellow gold does, letting the blue tones take more control.
The dial abides by the “less is more” law of dress watches, including only a small seconds complication to break up the stern presentation of the slender indices. Even minute tracks are considered too complex and distracting, instead opting for a white pinstripe to circumnavigate the dial and link the hour markers together. The logo above the Tutima script also breaks tradition slightly, but not in any way that could be considered obtrusive. The particular shade of blue is a rather versatile navy, capable of matching a variety of outfits while still remaining colourful.
Although the Tutima Patria can’t boast about its complications, their calibre 617 will still beckon you to flip the watch around and stare at it through the sapphire display caseback. With a panoramic view of the 31mm movement, you can pour over the finishing of this manually-wound movement to your heart’s content. The base is plated in rose gold to match the case, while yellow gold is visible in the screw-mounted chatons. The index-free oscillating system with a Breguet overcoil hairspring is mesmerising to watch, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour over a 65-hour power reserve.
