INTRODUCING: The Maurice Lacroix Aikon #tide Mahindra

  • The Maurice Lacroix Aikon #tide Mahindra teams up with the popular Formula E racing team.
  • The Mahindra Racing logo can be seen etched into the dial pattern.
  • The red and black case is made from upcycled ocean plastic.

The conversation of recycled plastic cases has been by and large overshadowed by the popularity of the MoonSwatch, but Maurice Lacroix are one of the few brands redirecting the issue back towards sustainability with the Aikon #tide. First released in 2022, this series has quickly proven to be one of the most attractive plastic watches on the market without sacrificing the quality and reliability of a traditional steel case. Partnering with a team who were there from the foundations of Formula E, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon #tide Mahindra reinforces both the futuristic and sporty qualities of both brands.

The case of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon #tide Mahindra is specifically made from upcycled ocean plastic, with each watch using up 17 plastic bottles. It’s able to be given rich, vibrant colours and Maurice Lacroix claims it forms a material four times stronger than typical plastics. It has the charming lightness on wrist as well as the slightly grained texture we expect from robust plastics without feeling cheap, thanks to the 40mm diameter, sturdy-looking bezel and a sapphire crystal. The fact that you’re looking down onto the Maurice Lacroix name and a Swiss-made stamp also helps, reminding you that this is, at heart, a luxury watch made affordable.

Mahindra Racing began in the world of MotoGP and competed in the first season of the Formula E Championship in 2014, where they’ve since gone on to land five race wins and 23 podiums. Their cars, which operate on the very fringes of electric vehicle technology, have sported a red and black livery since the beginning. Although the colours may blur to the naked eye as they reach 100km/h in under three seconds and continue up to 320km/h, on the #tide Mahindra the colours are at stark contrast. The black dial is subtly engraved with the team logo, with the blazing red visible on the thick bezel, as well as the applied indices and the hands. Two straps are supplied — one in black rubber for more versatility and one in red rubber for a more thrill-seeking look.

One of the best features of the Maurice Lacroix Aikon #tide Mahindra is the balance between team branding and Aikon looks, as you could still proudly wear this watch if you don’t follow Formula E at all. That said, if you are a real Mahindra supporter, the dial pattern gives you the perfect amount of fan satisfaction and bragging rights. A quartz movement powers the Aikon #tide, helping to bring the price point down to an accessible level.
