INTRODUCING: The Longines Spirit green dial offers a fresh look for the new collection

Nick Kenyon

It isn’t everyday that Longines launch an entirely new collection, but back in the middle of 2020 they did exactly that, announcing the all new Spirit collection. Taking cues from the pilot’s watches of the 20th century, but modernising the designs for the 21st, the Longines Spirit collection was a balanced blend of the old and the new with bold Arabic numerals and half-onion crowns combined with quick-change straps and modern calibers within. This year, the collection is stepping forward into the vogue tones that have already defined the watchmaking palette of 2021 with the arrival of the Longines Spirit green dial.

Starting with the new green dial, here we have an attractive shade of olive that is finished with an appropriately mossy texture, pairing nicely with the slightly beige lume in the hands and hour markers. The dial details are all well executed, giving off a slightly metallic effect to its surface and remaining consistent with the rest of the collection.

While the new dial is a significant change to how the watch will look on your wrist, it is the only change from the rest of the standard collection that includes blue, silver and black options. This new green reference is available in both the 40mm and 42mm sizes, which you can tell the difference between by the cut-off 3 o’clock numeral in the 42mm reference.

The two Longines Spirit green dial watches are available on either a tan leather strap or a stainless-steel bracelet, allowing the watch to be dressed up or down a little bit. They are powered by the high-spec calibre L888.4 that offers 72 hours of power reserve and are COSC-certified as shown via the text on the dial.

This isn’t a launch that’s going to win any prizes for technical innovation, but it does show Longines’ intentions in the Spirit collection as being a more commercial alternative to the heritage collection, who’s more orthodox vintage-inspired designs might be a little conservative for someone looking for a single everyday watch. The green is a nice alternative to the blue dial sports watches in the Longines catalogue and is a competitive addition to the growing list of watches that all share the unofficial colour of 2021.
