INTRODUCING: The Certina DS-2 Turning Bezel is a cushion-cased diver with a touch of retro flair
Fergus NashIt’s funny to think that there was a point in time where a turning bezel was a major selling point, but by 1960 a dive watch with a rotating bezel hadn’t even existed for more than seven years. Embracing some of the quirkier elements of midcentury design and marrying them with modern style, the Certina DS-2 Turning Bezel adds diving functionality to their DS-2 catalogue. There’s also a special edition in aid of the Sea Turtle Conservancy, who will receive a portion of the profits from that model.
The established style of the modern Certina DS-2 is a fairly accurate reproduction of the DS-2 from 1968, with a rounded and ovular case made sporty by a flattened and brushed front-facing facet. Although the Certina PH200M has already been reissued with its 1950s design nods, there was actually a crossover between the two series with both DS-2 and PH200M printed on the dial. This is what the new Certina DS-2 Turning Bezel is based upon, with a slightly more pronounced cushion case than the standard DS-2, and of course the diving bezel. The tonneau case shape makes for a great wearing experience, with 42mm x 41mm dimensions that maximise on-wrist presence while remaining friendly to small wrists.
The standard editions of the Certina DS-2 Turning Bezel are made from stainless steel and come with multiple strap options. Both are supplied with a stainless steel H-link bracelet, with polished links that enhance the luxurious qualities of this otherwise very sporty watch. The reference with the deep blue sunburst dial also totes a rugged brown leather strap, while the black sunburst model has a grey fabric strap. The Sea Turtle Conservancy Special Edition doesn’t just feature a matte black dial with a popping blue seconds hand, but also a case made from titanium. The low-density metal in combination with a grey and blue striped NATO-style strap made from recycled ocean plastic makes for an easy, lightweight wearing experience.
All three models have a sapphire exhibition caseback which, alongside the screw-down crown, seals in the 200m water resistance. Through it you can see the ETA Powermatic 80.611 movement complete with a Nivachron hairspring for better reliability and antimagnetic properties. The Powermatic 80 and its variants have swept across plenty of Swatch Group brands, with the 80-hour power reserve being a massive draw for watch enthusiasts who like to keep up a daily rotation.
