INTRODUCING: The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG is made to go fast, really fast
Nick KenyonIWC and the Mercedes performance arm, AMG, have had a long and fruitful relationship since they first joined forces back in 2004. Things were taken to the next level when Mercedes entered into Formula 1, the pinnacle of motorsports racing, back in 2010 and IWC became a key partner only a few years later, just as the team began to win their seven consecutive Formula One World Constructors’ Championships from 2014 to 2020. To celebrate this partnership, the two brands have collaborated on a new timepiece in the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG, which emphasises the elements that the two high-performance manufacturers have in common.
Using the appealing template of the Chronograph 43 from IWC, the new IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG features a lightweight 43mm titanium case. Measuring 14.9mm thick, the chronograph has a screw-down exhibition caseback that guarantees it to 60m of water resistance – more than enough for what you’re likely to encounter day-to-day. While the case is slightly larger than the recently released Chronograph 41, the titanium case is likely to make it feel significantly less bulky on the wrist than steel might.
The real point of difference in the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph Edition AMG is the carbon-fibre dial, which speaks to the incredibly strong and lightweight material that has been a feature of F1 racing for so long. The woven fibre pattern creates a strong contrast against the silvered chronograph subdials, which can be seen at 6, 9 and 12 o’clock, while the date and day aperture is at 3 o’clock. Another little Easter egg is the AMG logo that can be found emblazoned over the sapphire-crystal caseback of the watch.
Powering this automotive-inspired chronograph is the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre, which offers 46 hours of power reserve as it ticks away at 28,800 vph. The watch arrives on a comfortable black leather strap, which also features a subtly woven pattern that reminds of the dial texture. All considered, it is a watch that pays proper tribute to the close relationship between Mercedes AMG and IWC, both well known for their high-precision engineering and a focus on performance.
