The Hamilton Murph 38mm enters a new dimension with a cosmic blue dial
Tom Austin- Hamilton has expanded the Khaki Field Murph 38mm with a textured blue-to-black dial inspired by the glowing ionised gases surrounding an interstellar comet.
- The familiar 38mm stainless-steel case keeps its 11.1mm thickness, 100-metre water resistance, anti-reflective sapphire crystal and highly practical 20mm lug width.
- This new version of the watch that carried Cooper’s message across time in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar returns on steel or leather, powered by Hamilton’s 80-hour H-10 calibre.
There aren’t many cinematic watches out there that carry the emotional weight of the Murph. Christopher Nolan’s now-iconic sci-fi hit Interstellar gives time a physical presence: it stretches, steals decades and ultimately provides Cooper with a route back to his daughter. The watch he leaves with her becomes the instrument for that reunion, its seconds hand carrying the quantum data Murph needs across dimensions and delivering the film’s glorious “Eureka” moment. Hamilton created that watch as a prop inspired by the Khaki Field, then answered years of fan demand with a production 42mm Murph carrying “Eureka” in Morse code on its seconds hand.
A 38mm edition followed in response to calls for a smaller case and went on to become a bestseller, alongside an interesting white dial variation. Building on that success, this latest version sends the 38mm Murph deeper into Nolan’s cosmos with a blue dial inspired by an interstellar comet. I have watched Interstellar enough times to know exactly when the tears are coming, and Murph remains a rare screen watch whose emotional weight grows with every viewing.
The stainless-steel case measures 38mm across and 11.1mm thick, dimensions well suited to a straightforward, three-hand Khaki Field. Its 20mm lugs leave a wide range of aftermarket straps available, and Hamilton equips the watch with an anti-reflective sapphire crystal, an exhibition caseback, and 100 metres of water resistance. The broad dial opening gives the elaborate surface a clear presentation, and the compact external measurements suit the field-watch origins that shaped the movie prop.
It’s an unusual choice, but the dial is the main reason for this new version of the Murph. A vivid blue occupies the centre before darkening towards black around the perimeter, echoing the bright ionised gases and trailing darkness of a comet moving through space. The pronounced grain adds a stardust-like texture, with the surface shifting as light crosses it. Warm, slightly domed Arabic numerals sit around the track with matching minute plots, joined by the familiar nickelled cathedral hour and minute hands filled with Super-LumiNova and a nickelled seconds hand. The colour gives the Murph a direct visual connection to the voyage that created its name, from the Endurance slipping past Saturn to the impossible geometry of the tesseract.
Hamilton’s H-10 automatic calibre handles the timekeeping, supplying 80 hours of power reserve from a full wind. That gives you more than three days away from the wrist before the watch stops, an especially useful figure for anyone rotating a few pieces. A Nivachron balance spring brings added resistance to magnetic fields, temperature changes and shocks, and the date-free display preserves the clean layout associated with the Murph. The movement is visible through the open caseback, giving the watch’s mechanical side a suitably prominent role.
The bracelet version, reference H70405140, uses a stainless-steel bracelet with a folding clasp and Hamilton’s Easy Click system for simple removal. The steel links give the blue dial a cool, contemporary frame. Reference H70405740 arrives on black calf leather, finished with light stitching and an 18mm stainless-steel pin buckle, its familiar format tying neatly into the prop’s on-screen character.
For Interstellar fans, every extension of the Murph carries an unusual amount of responsibility. This blue edition draws from the film’s wider visual world, giving the watch a stronger sense of the journey beyond Murph’s bedroom and out towards Gargantua. The Murph carries a message through time in Interstellar, and this blue dial brings a little more of space along with it.
