Lovers of Grand Seiko are most often won over by a myriad of factors, including their spectacular finishing, tradition-infused design, and value for money. Watches & Wonders 2023 has had a lot to offer in those departments as well as wow factor, but those looking for something a little more versatile will love the new Grand Seiko Heritage Collection in Ever-Brilliant Steel. Five new references offer a package that’s tame and refined, without sacrificing any of the captivating Grand Seiko character.

When considering a new watch for daily wear, comfort is the priority in both style and physical form. You don’t want it to stand out so much that it would be jarring, however you need at least a little bit of personality to shine through. Grand Seiko have achieved this in the Heritage Collection by the subtle inclusion of a “Mt. Iwate” dial pattern, which has the same lighting effect as sunburst brushing but with a deeper and richer texture. Across the five references, there are three dial colours that help to retain a good amount of personality while remaining appropriate for any contexts. The three-hand models are available in either a slightly creamy silver dial which is said to evoke the snow-capped mountain, while the black dial version depicts a moonlit scene. The third colour comes into play with the GMT references, with a deep midnight blue and a rose gold GMT hand.

The 44GS case is now a staple of Grand Seiko, embodying their ethos of wearability and strong, sharp designs. Ever-Brilliant Steel is an updated alloy that provides a whiter lustre and better corrosion resistance than regular stainless steel. It’s 40mm in diameter and 46.2mm from lug-to-lug, ensuring a relatively gender-neutral option. The three-hand models are 13.3mm thick, while the GMT version goes up to 14mm. Both categories utilise Hi-Beat movements as well, with the in-house calibers 9S85 and 9S86 beating at 36,000vph across a 55-hour power reserve. Grand Seiko also guarantees an accuracy within +5/-3 seconds per day, bettering the chronometer standard.
