Furlan Marri takes the Mechaquartz to the dunes of Saudi Arabia, in collaboration with CLÉ: The Gallery

We all know by now how good-looking Furlan Marri’s watches are. The brand has carved a niche in the industry by resurrecting a specific vintage style, predominantly seen these days at the world’s biggest vintage auctions, while adding a unique flair that sets it apart. The beauty of this unique approach to design is that it allows for some stunning collaborations, something that we at Time+Tide are very well acquainted with.
Furlan Marri’s latest collaboration not only celebrates a significant part of its own roots, but also builds a bond with Saudi-based luxury retail concierge service CLÉ: The Gallery. The partnership came about thanks to both companies’ mutual commitment to bringing people and communities together through the world of luxury, design and emotion, and today, the result has been unveiled: the Furlan Mari x CLÉ Sahra Edition, the second model in Furlan Marri’s Editions line after our very own Furlan Marri x Time+Tide Outback Elegy.
Saudi-Arabian influences run deep through Furlan Marri as a brand, so much so that it considers this special edition as a tribute to the second land of its origins. This makes perfect sense, considering that one of the GPHG award-winning brand’s founders, Hamad Al Marri, is a Saudi national himself, alongside Saudi entrepreneur Yasmine Al Shathry, founder of CLÉ: The Gallery.
The Sahra Edition is based on Furlan Marri’s highly successful mechaquartz platform, which combines the classic aesthetics of vintage icons with modern, luxurious details. Its case is crafted from 316L stainless steel, delicately polished throughout, except for the side flanks, which are finely brushed. At 38mm in diameter, 12mm thick, and with a 46mm lug-to-lug measurement, its classic proportions are just about perfect, and the vintage-style chronograph pushers lend the watch a real sense of character.
It’s not just a looker, either; the case offers real functionality. The screw down caseback, quality pushers and crown, paired with an anti-reflective-coated, scratch-resistant domed sapphire crystal, provide the watch with a notable 50 meters of water resistance, which makes this FM Mechaquartz a genuine every-day wearer.
Taking heavy inspiration from the vast desert landscapes of Saudi Arabia, the dial is a stunning combination of tonal golden brown and tan textures, with more details appearing the closer you look. The lacquered colours evoke the sun glistening off the desert dunes, while the darker tones reflect the distinctive hues of traditional Najdi architecture.
The layout is similar to other FM Mechaquartz pieces we’ve seen; yes, it’s busy, but that’s clearly intentional, and part of its charm. It doesn’t disrupt the dial’s flow or functionality. There’s a running-seconds dial at 9 o’clock, which is the version I prefer, thanks to its unusual, awesome-looking asymmetry. The Saudi influence runs throughout the dial’s finer details, too, with the Eastern Arabic numerals honouring the region’s intellectual heritage, and the domed hour markers are a respectful nod to Islamic architecture. Naturally, everything about the dial, including the lovingly polished dial furniture, has been executed to the high standards we’ve come to expect from Furlan Marri.
Powering the watch, just like its mechaquartz stablemates, is the Seiko VK64 hybrid mechaquartz chronograph movement. It’s a quartz base combined with a mechanical chronograph module, something Seiko excels at, and has been perfecting for decades. It offers all the advantages of quartz power, such as insane accuracy and long power reserves, with the satisfying mechanical clunk of a chronograph pusher.
Finally, the finishing touches to the watch come in the form of two textured leather straps, one in a dark, sandy brown and the other in a light, cream-coloured finish. Both straps feature quick-release spring bars, alongside a stainless steel pin buckle for closure. The straps are presented alongside the watch in a specially designed sand-themed watch box, again, another nod to Furlan Marri’s meticulous attention to detail.
