FRIDAY WIND DOWN: Friday, 24th July 2015
Felix ScholzSome Fridays need a little more winding down than others. This, friends, is one of those Fridays. It’s been a big week at camp Time+Tide full of firsts, surprises and speeches. Also a big IWC review about a big watch, a Cartier factory visit and an event we frankly didn’t want to end…. We’ve earned the weekend, have a great one, wherever you are.
What actually mattered?
We love a good watchspot, and usually Hollywood celebrities or sportspeople are our spotting targets of choice. But the team over at Deployant kicked it up a notch, watchspotting members of the world’s royal families. Nek level. Not a Casio to be seen. However the most touching watch is Prince William’s humble Omega Speedmaster, gifted to him by his mother.
Special mention goes to Prince Michael of Kent (Time+Tide’s new style icon) and his vintage two-tone Royal Oak. But boy, let the before and after pics be a lesson – 20 years can change your hair and beard game pretty radically…
What happened?
46 years ago this week (July 21st at 2:56 UTC to be precise) man first walked on the moon. Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin took a few small steps. This is as good a reason as any to explore the amazingly rich world of the Omega Speedmaster, and a solid place to start is Speedy Tuesday.
Panerai announced an America only (for now) e-boutique. Is the tide finally turning on luxury brands retailing online?
The week in numbers:
60: The number of guests at our Montblanc evening
1980: The year Hublot were founded. Surprising, non?
300: The number of people, give or take, who have passed the Danish Naval Combat Dive course. SINCE 1957. Every year several hundred try out, despite a 90% failure rate.
10: The level of Time+Tide Community Engagement Officer/part-time watch model’s swag. Look out cab drivers! #allhailandy
57: The number of people weighing in on the perennial ‘blacked out Rollies – yay/nay’ debate – a very rough vote breakdown would have the jury split at 65% Not cool. Don’t Do It Ever and 35% Fire emoji, totally cool. Go Nuts. Our favourite comment though, went to WatchTime Magazine – who seemed to vote three times. Either that or they have fairly intense emoji moodswings.
