FRIDAY WIND DOWN: Celebrity watch spotting and a watch designed by the people who’ll wear it

Nick Kenyon

Despite living in Melbourne’s lockdown 4.0, it was another busy week at Time+Tide, where we took a look at a few of the watches of the rich and famous. From Drake and Travis Scott to LVMH founder Bernard Arnault, when you’ve got more money than you can ever possibly spend, what are the watches you buy? We all know that money can’t buy taste, but across the board there wasn’t a disappointing watch in sight.

Travis Scott has a penchant for complicated Patek Philippe references as well as two different examples of an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Double Balance Wheel Openworked, all before you look at his pieces from Richard Mille. Considering that most rappers are wearing after-market, diamond-set monstrosities, Scott either has some serious horological aficionados in his corner, or just has really, really good taste in wristwatches.

What about Drake? Well we tried to find his most low-key watch, after seeing him endlessly wearing Richard Mille and Patek Philippe, but it was a challenge to spot him with anything on his wrist that wasn’t insanely desirable. In the end it was a Rolex Pearlmaster 39 ref. 86348SABLV that was decided to be his least hyped watch, which says something about Drake for his least attractive watch to still be a factory gem-setting tour de force from Rolex.

Finally Bernard Arnault, who also happens to be the richest man on the planet with a net worth of $192.9 billion (eclipsing Jeff Bezos in May of this year). This is someone who knows the watch and luxury goods business better than anyone, so what watch does he wear? Something from the LVMH stable, of course: he’s typically spotted wearing TAG Heuer and Hublot.

Have a great weekend (and stay sane if you’re in Melbourne)

From Eminem to Spike Lee, the G-Shock is still the celebrity beater of choice

G-Shock continues to be one of the most potent cultural zeitgeists of the watch world, not only as an affordable entry point for those that just want a watch, but also for celebrities around the world. Thor took a look at six celebs who like to keep their wrists more humbly adorned. Check out the full list right here.

Keen to get a discount on Rolex? With the help of eBay, it’s possible

eBay Rolex discount

If you’re a regular reader of Time+Tide, you’ll know that looking for a desirable Rolex and an affordable price is generally a fool’s game. Well eBay are doing their bit to lower that barrier, offering discounts of up to 30% this weekend. We selected seven attractive options, which you can see right here.

MICRO MONDAYS: The DWISS M3 is designed for the people, by the people

DWISS M3

The DWISS M3 was designed in partnership with a collector group who are fans of the brand. They helped to brainstorm everything from the diameter right down to the dial accents. How great is that? A watch designed by the people, for the people. For the full review, you can check it out here.
