FRIDAY WIND DOWN: Exploring Tasmania with Rado, the best watch for a job interview and a new column on T+T

Luke Benedictus

In a depressingly predictable turn of events, Melbourne is back under lockdown. Luckily, just before we were imprisoned in our homes once again, Andrew and I managed to escape to Tasmania for a press event to celebrate the Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic.

The Captain Cook is squarely aimed at “the modern explorer” and Rado dreamed up a trip infused with adventure to put the skeletonised watch through its paces. The watch’s shock resistance was tested to the full during an epic day of mountain biking in the rainforests surrounding the town of Derby.

Splattered with mud and soaked with watch-journalist adrenaline (via osmosis), the Captain Cook was then subjected to a trial of fire and ice. First it was heated up on our wrists in a floating sauna before undergoing a dip in a ball-shrinkingly icy lake.

Naturally, the watch laughed off such rigours. A skeletonised dial may suggest a certain fragility, but as a ceramic diving watch with 300m of water resistance, make no mistake, the Rado Captain Cook High Tech Ceramic is one tough cookie (stay tuned for Andrew’s full review later this week).

The day finished in style with a chopper ride back to the hotel located at the famous Barnbougle golf course. As the pilot said: “Finishing a day of mountain biking in a helicopter ride where your destination isn’t the nearest hospital is ultimately a pretty good day.”

Have a great weekend, even if you’re in lockdown.

In this new column, stand-up comedian David Smiedt looks at the more affordable end of the watch world, this week focusing on American brand Breda. Check out the new column here.
