Frederique Constant continues its value-driven upmarket evolution with the Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture

  • The new Frederique Constant Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture shrinks its case size and ups its power reserve thanks to a new movement.
  • The perpetual calendar calibre FC-776 is the 34th in-house movement made by Frederique Constant, with a 72-hour power reserve.
  • The sunburst salmon dial keeps enough information on display, while neatly contained within three subdials.

Frederique Constant simply cannot stop itself from self-improvement. 2024 was an incredibly prolific year for the Swiss brand, and 2025 shows no signs of slowing down as the Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture receives both a new movement and a new case to go along with it. This is Frederique Constant’s 34th in-house movement after all, so whipping out a perfect-proportion perpetual calendar may as well be old hat by now. For just under US$10k, it’s also a value proposition as a mechanical, high-complication, luxury watch.

Frederique Constant Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture 1

It’s always been shockingly easy to overlook Frederique Constant, as its approach to affordable Swiss luxury is one of tradition and respect. But while the classical elegance its pride is built upon can make eyes wander to something more exciting, a prolonged look will reveal immaculate attention to detail which rivals far more expensive watches. Even if you put the skill of the Frederique Constant design team aside, there aren’t many other brands that can make an automatically winding perpetual calendar in-house at this level for such an accessible price. Of course, US$9,995 is still a lot more money than most people can spend on a watch, but this is one that can compete with watches orders of magnitude more expensive.

Housed in a stainless steel case, the Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture is now available in a 40mm size. That’s not just nice because smaller watches are now trendy, but because it’s quite difficult to make complicated calibres fit into small watches. The design of the case itself is quite simplistic, allowing all of the focus to stay with the dial, but its onion crown is a lovely vintage touch. At 12.1mm tall, it’s definitely not going to win any prizes for thinness, but it won’t seem overly bulky and it could still slip beneath a cuff. 50 metres of water resistance is about what you’d expect for a watch like this, as it won’t be something to wear in the pool, but you don’t need to fear washing your hands. The dial side is clean and easy to digest, with most of the information spread across three subdials and an additional moonphase display. The top subdial combines the leap year indicator and month displays, while there’s a pointer date at 3 o’clock and a weekday wheel at 9. The salmon colour has now been firmly established as a dress watch staple, especially in this silky sunburst finish. The alpha hands are also beautiful, giving some strong character to the dial which is otherwise prioritising elegance.

Frederique Constant Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture caseback

The real star of the show for the Frederique Constant Classic Perpetual Calendar Manufacture is the new calibre FC-776, following the brand’s 2024 mission to overhaul its Classic collection with manufacture movements. It doesn’t look like all that much from the sapphire display caseback, even if the hint of perlage and brushed decoration is very pretty, and the central circular bridge makes for an intriguing design. Its gold winding rotor tops up a 72-hour power reserve, and it beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Being a perpetual calendar, it won’t require adjustment until the year 2100. It comes on a dark brown alligator leather strap with a stainless steel butterfly clasp and matching brown stitching, complimenting the warmth of the dial.
