Eleven of the best “his/her” watches just in time for Valentine’s Day (2023 edition)
Zach BlassLook, I know some will roll their eyes at the “his/her” trope in the title. And, to be clear, I actually agree with you. Colloquially, however, this is how we refer to the concept of a matching pair of watches that partners can both wear. So, before we dive into eleven of the best “his/her” watches, let me be unfailingly clear. Everyone can wear what they want, and, even within the traditional landscape of his and her, her wrist could theoretically be larger than his. Therefore, at the risk of you the reader feeling duped, I am taking the opportunity to showcase collections that offer a wide spectrum of sizes and best afford you and your partner the opportunity to wear the same watch in a size that best suits you.
Hublot Classic Fusion 33/38/42
Hublot’s core model, the design that started it all for the brand, has a gender neutral aesthetic that is offered in three sizes that can suit any wrist. It is also offered in three different materials, so you can decide with your partner if titanium, ceramic, or yellow gold is more your speed. Really the only limitation, aesthetically speaking, is that there is only one dial option across all configurations. That being said, the black lacquer dial allows the watch to be easily paired with any wardrobe. For a deeper hands-on dive into the new Classic Fusion range, you can click here.

Cartier Santos Medium and Large
In the same vein as the Classic Fusion above, the Santos de Cartier is an incredibly versatile icon. It is a watch that cannot look bad on anyone, and will empower anyone wearing with boss-class confidence. The only real separator between the medium and large sizing is the date complication, and if I am being totally honest I think the medium is the one to buy regardless of your wrist size as it’s the closest to the classic sizing traditionally associated with the Santos. Both feature the QuickSwitch interchangeable strap system, so you can easily switch between the bracelet and included leather strap. Also, the bracelet is so user-friendly it can be DIY-sized with ease – no tools necessary, just your finger. Really neat.

TAG Heuer Carrera Three Hands 29/39/41
When I reviewed the Carrera Three Hands collection upon its debut a year or so ago, the thing that really stood out to me was the fact the watch was equally as powerful regardless of size. Most brands, unfortunately, pay less mind to their watches as they are scaled down – diminishing the level of water-resistance or using less glamorous calibres. Within this collection however, the 29mm model is not only not quartz-powered, but also has an automatic calibre 9 movement that boasts two more hours of power reserve than the Calibre 5’s found in the 39mm and 41mm models. The 29mm also shares the same 100m depth rating as its siblings, keeping a consistency throughout the Three Hands collection we love to see.

Oris Aquis Date “Upcycle” 36.5/41.5
For the environmentally conscious couple, the Oris Aquis Date “Upcycle” is a robust conversation piece that will symbolise your shared values well. Neither I or Oris for that matter, will pretend that the PET dials alone are making a huge dent in preserving the climate. It does, however, with its bold rainbow aesthetic start a dialogue about environmental issues and efforts that can be made. Buying an Oris watch, regardless of its dial material, is an act of support towards our planet, as the manufacture itself is climate neutral and participates and sponsors in environmental efforts that truly work towards the cause. As for the watch itself, the Sellita-based movement keeps the cost down and its robust case and bracelet ensures, whether the 36.5mm or 41mm variant, you each have a rock-solid daily wearer.

Tudor Black Bay S&G 31/36/39/41
I totally could have pointed out the Rolex Datejust or Oyster Perpetual as options here. But there is no guarantee you can easily source either at retail. Tudor’s Black Bay S&G, however, is a much more readily accessible offering, but not a steep compromise in quality. In fact, were you to hold these in hand you would have a hard time understanding why Rolex’s offerings command a much higher price tag. You have every size you could possibly want, jubilee-style bracelets that have Tudor’s T-Fit extension system that far surpasses Rolex’s easylink, and a range of dial options. Also, each of the watch utilise Tudor manufactured COSC-certified movements – the 31 using their MT5201 with 50 hours of power reserve and the 36 (MT5400), 39 (MT5602), and 41 (MT5601) with 70 hours of power reserve.

Omega De Ville Prestige 27.5/30/32.7/34/40/41
If I am being totally honest, I never really paid much mind to the De Ville Prestige collection until this past Golden Globes awards – where actors Paul Dano and Ke Huy Quan were each seen wearing Prestige watches (Dano with a 41mm model and Quan with a 34mm model). As I dug into the collection, I learned there is a whopping total of 441 configurations that are available, with the main collection comprised of 138 watches. So, you have plenty of options to comb through with your partner in this collection. Below 30mm you are looking at quartz movements, but at as small as 32.7mm Co-Axial movements enter the equation and at 34mm and above you enter METAS certified Co-Axial Master Chronometer territory. So, whichever size you choose, you are privy to some heavy hitting and robust horology. With such a wide range of dial colors, and Co-Axial movements at the ready, this is a dressy Omega that any classy couple could really enjoy together.

Zenith Defy Skyline 36/41
With the introduction of the Skyline 36mm this past LVMH Watch Week, the collection is not only more versatile in size but function as well. With the 41mm only 46.3mm lug-to-lug, and the 36mm model 40.6mm lug-to-lug, either can be worn by pretty much any size wrist – it is really a matter of taste. The key separator between the two, aside from different colour options in the 36mm size, is that the 36mm uses an elite movement with a standard central seconds hands while the 41mm model boasts the full hi-beat might of Zenith with a 1/10th of a second counter at the 9′ position. Either way you choose, you have a robust 100m water-resistant watch with an interchangeable strap system that allows you to quickly switch between the bundled bracelet and rubber strap.

Nomos Orion 33/35/38
I am not going to labour this one. If you are a couple with a penchant for Bauhaus design, the Nomos Orion offers a clean and crisp design in all the right sizes. It is also a more cost-approachable means of engaging with German watchmaking as a duo.

Jaeger-Lecoultre Reverso (34.2mm x 21mm – 49.4mm x 29.9mm)
The beauty of the Reverso is that there is a wide range of sizes and complications to dig into, and, depending on the model, you can also have a shared personalised engraving to really make the watch special for you both. Icon is such a loaded term that I fully admit can be overused at times. But the Reverso truly is an iconic watch design with an Art-Deco aesthetic and build you can really only find at JLC.

Chopard Alpine Eagle 33/36/41
With a new 33mm size entering the fold, there now really is an Alpine Eagle for every wrist. At the entry point within the collection, you can have each of the sizes in the brand’s proprietary Lucent steel that boasts a heightened lustre and a greater level of resistance against wear. Integrated designs are all the rage these days, but the St. Moritz-inspired Alpine Eagle is definitely one of the more distinct stand-outs within the category. First and foremost, its eagle iris dial offers a texture and depth unique to the brand.

Vacheron Historiques 1921 36.5/40
Rounding out this list, I have saved what I believe to be the ultimate “his/her” watch. A widely held grail amongst watch enthusiasts, the 1921 is prestigious and distinct with its stunning ’20s design. And it is also well-sized between its 36.5mm and 40mm configurations, offering options for those who skew towards classic sizing or modern sizing. Whereas we often see a change in calibre between different sized models within the same collection, both the 36.5mm and 40mm variants use the same gorgeously decorated in-house calibre.
