echo/neutra unveils a new, smaller Rivanera with an ultra-black twist: introducing the Rivanera Piccolo
Tom Austin- echo/neutra returns with a new iteration of its smash-hit rectangular Rivanera, the Piccolo, showcasing new dial finishes and an entirely new, more petite case.
- Three dial variations are available: two are textured guilloché “Grain De Riz” white and black dials, and the third features an ultra-black, light-absorbing Musou Black finish.
- Crafted from grade 5 titanium, the new angular case is 7mm shorter and 1mm narrower, giving the Piccolo a completely refreshed look.
Over the last couple of years, despite enthusiasts still striving for 36-40mm sports watches, the trend towards smaller, dressier watches has persisted. Starting as a kind of avant-garde, Instagram-centric movement, it seems that everywhere you look, someone you know is wearing a small, rectangular watch. But there’s a good reason for this: no matter how you look at it, the rectangular dress watch is damn cool, and it’s back in a big way.
One brand that took this wave by storm recently is the Italian microbrand echo/neutra, with the release of the Rivanera in late 2024. It took the classic rectangular dress watch and gave it an almost brutal, minimalist makeover, using dark shades and angular titanium in the classiest way possible. Now, nearly a year later, the Rivanera returns once more, this time in the form of the Piccolo.
The most significant change with the Rivanera Piccolo is the case. Once again cast in grade 5 titanium, it’s now more square in its design, with the lug-to-lug measurement being 7mm shorter than the original model at 33mm. The case width is 1mm narrower, but that’s imperceptible, really, and the same can be said for the 1mm increase in case thickness. These proportion adjustments give the Piccolo an entirely new look while retaining wearability and the Rivanera’s contemporary yet classic design.
The case is treated once more to a fine sandblasted finish and features the tight, sharp angles that make it unmistakably a Rivanera. There’s a flat sapphire crystal up front, and a screw-down sapphire exhibition case back at the rear, meaning the watch retains its 30 meters of water resistance.
Previously, the dials of the Rivanera were monochromatic, black or grey affairs, which suited the watch just fine: that theme has been extended into the Rivanera Piccolo. However, echo/neutra has stepped up its game when it comes to the details. There are three variations available: the first two feature a refined, radial guilloché-like textured pattern consisting of around 1,000 tiny granules. This is applied to either a charcoal black or white dial, and while it’s a highly detailed finish, it still keeps the design minimal and uncluttered.
The third model, however, takes minimalism to the next level, offered in Musou Black, the world’s blackest acrylic paint and one of the darkest compounds available to the public. Let me be clear, this is no standard black dial. Musou Black pigment absorbs 99.4% of the light that hits it, making it one of the blackest blacks you can imagine.
Looking at it is like staring into a rectangular black hole with polished hands telling the time in the centre. There are no reflections, just complete blackness, which is somewhat unnerving at first because there’s not much that exists in nature that behaves that way, but soon after, you realise that it’s just seriously cool. Ultra-black pigments like these have been previously experimented with by high-end established brands like Blancpain and H. Moser & Cie, so it’s cool to see a similar treatment on a much more affordable watch.
If you manage to climb out of the abyss of the dial, flip the watch over, and you’ll find an exhibition case back, showcasing the Sellita SW1000 automatic movement inside. The rotor has been decorated with côtes de Genève and a Rivanera logo, and the bridges are finished with perlage, which visually denotes that this SW1000 calibre is the elaboré grade, offering higher accuracy and finishing levels than the rest. It manages a 46-hour power reserve, while beating at 28,800 vph, which is more than enough for a watch like this, and also provides the Rivanera Piccolo with a date window at 6 o’clock, unlike the previous model (which was also manual-winding).
Another subtle but significant change for this Rivanera is the straps, with the Piccolo offered in three different variations, all in black, but featuring textures like pebbled leather, ribbed rubber, or smooth leather. All the straps are finished with a titanium pin buckle, just like before, but these different surfaces all offer the watch a subtly different look.
The smooth strap contrasts with the “Grain De Riz” pattern on the dials, while the ribbed version brings a truly ultra-modern look when paired with the Musou Black dial. Bear in mind that these straps don’t feature a quick-release system, so you’ll have to be handy with a spring bar tool to change them, which is easy enough.
