The echo/neutra Averau 42 Ceramic Sand Collection is built for the field, dressed for the dunes
Tom Austin- echo/neutra introduces a new sand-coloured dial across both its Averau42 Ceramic Automatic and Automatic Chronograph models.
- Both models combine matte black ceramic with an internal grade 2 titanium TiFrame construction for added strength.
- The collection offers a choice between a Sellita-powered three-hander or an automatic chronograph, each with its own distinctive character and purpose.
If you’ve followed echo/neutra on the pages of Time+Tide in recent years, you’ll probably associate the Italian brand with elegant rectangular dress watches with a contemporary twist. The Rivenara and, more recently, the Rivanera Piccolo have established a distinctive identity of their own, but the latest Averau 42 Ceramic Sand collection serves as a reminder that echo/neutra is just as comfortable building contemporary, high-functioning field watches. Offered in both three-handed and chronograph form, the new sand-coloured dials bring a warmer, yet almost tougher look to one of the brand’s more technically ambitious collections.
Although the two watches differ mechanically, they share exactly the same philosophy when it comes to construction. The outer shell is formed from matte black ceramic, while beneath it sits echo/neutra’s TiFrame architecture, an internal grade 2 titanium framework that houses the movement and extends through the lugs.
Ceramic offers excellent scratch resistance and a distinctive satin finish, but can be vulnerable to impacts around the lugs. By reinforcing those areas with titanium, echo/neutra has created a case that takes advantage of both materials by using engineering methods not immediately obvious from the outside, but becomes one of the defining features of the watch once you understand how it’s put together.
The dimensions naturally separate the two models. The Automatic measures 42mm in diameter, 10.5mm thick and 51.5mm lug-to-lug, giving it a reassuringly slim profile for a ceramic field watch. The Chronograph retains the same 42mm diameter and 51.5mm lug-to-lug measurement, with thickness increasing to 14.6mm to accommodate the larger movement inside. Sapphire crystals protect both dials, while 100 metres of water resistance makes each perfectly suited to everyday wear.
Previous versions of the ceramic Averau leaned into darker, more tactical colour palettes, whereas this new muted, beige tone gives both models an entirely fresh character. Against the matte black ceramic case, the contrast is striking without becoming high-contrast in the traditional black-and-white sense. Instead, the muted colours work together to create a warm monochromatic look that feels contemporary while remaining highly legible, yet still keeping that tactical edge.
The Automatic makes the most of that simplicity. Large, black applied baton hour markers and broad, black-filled hands leave plenty of open space across the dial, allowing the sand finish to become the visual focus. A discreet red accent on the tip of the second hand provides just enough colour to stop the design feeling clinical, while subtle, thin minute markers ensure the dial is perfectly functional at a glance.
The Chronograph naturally takes on a busier appearance, but it still remains exceptionally balanced. Dark charcoal sub-dials sit proudly against the sand background to create an almost reverse-panda layout, while the central chronograph seconds hand introduces another subtle flash of red. Despite carrying significantly more information, it’s well executed and, unlike several chronographs, quite legible, thanks largely to the generous dial opening and thoughtful use of contrast.
Echo/Neutra has chosen proven Swiss calibres for both models. Inside the three-hand Automatic is the Sellita SW200-1, beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour with a 41-hour power reserve. It has become one of the industry’s most trusted workhorse movements and suits the watch’s everyday nature perfectly.
The Chronograph steps things up with the Sellita SW510B. Running at the same 4Hz frequency, it extends power reserve to 56 hours while providing a traditional automatic chronograph layout. Both movements prioritise reliability and ease of servicing, but as they’re both Elaboré-grade Sellitas, they feature subtle upgrades to the decorative finishing, alongside being adjusted in three positions, giving a tighter accuracy tolerance of +/- 7 to +/-20 seconds per day.
Both references are fitted to black textile straps that reinforce the collection’s understated character. The woven material complements the matte finish of the ceramic case particularly well, while the dark metal hardware mirrors the construction of the watch itself. It’s a practical pairing that keeps the overall weight down and allows the warm sand dial to remain the visual focal point.
The Averau 42 Ceramic Sand collection demonstrates that you don’t always need to reinvent a watch to give it a fresh identity. By introducing a warmer dial colour, echo/neutra has shifted the mood of a collection without changing the Averau field-watch formula. The three-hand Automatic offers a clean, slim everyday option, while the Chronograph gives a strong alternative for those who prefer a little more complication. Whichever you choose, both showcase an interesting approach to modern case construction, thoughtful design, and the versatility of a brand that’s proving it has far more to offer than interesting rectangular dress watches.
