Dennison is doubling down on natural dials, and we absolutely love it

Dennison, the originally Midlands-based manufacturer once trusted to produce cases for the likes of Rolex and Omega, took a genuine gamble when it relaunched in 2024. Two years later, that risk has paid off. The ALD, the watch that came to define Dennison’s return, has become arguably one of the most compelling, accessible dress watches on the market today. The timing of the revival was impeccable, arriving just as slim, elegant watches began reclaiming space in everyday wear, and at the point where the industry’s renewed fascination with stone dials exploded, led by brands like Piaget.
Designed by the legendary Emmanuel Gueit, who penned watches such as Rolex’s Cellini Moonphase and, of course, the AP Royal Oak Offshore, the ALD captures that modern dress-watch sensibility perfectly, wrapped in a case shape that’s quickly becoming emblematic of the brand’s revival.
The soft, lugless shape of the ALD is now instantly recognisable, with gentle curves creating a pebble-like, 33.65mm wide cushion design. At just 6.05mm thick, and with not one single sharp corner in sight, you barely even know you’re wearing it, and the 37mm lug-to-lug measurement means it sits on practically any wrist with comfort and ease. The best part? There are two case finishes across the entire range, so any dial can be paired with either a polished stainless steel finish or a gold PVD finish, and each case finish gives every dial a distinct character.
Late last summer, after celebrating Dennison’s arrival in the cabinets of the Time+Tide Watch Discovery Studio, we announced our very own collaboration with the brand, DateNight, featuring their first-ever marquetry dial, set with Australian mother-of-pearl. Not only did the dial’s parquet-patterned shades of blue, purple and teal pay homage to T+T’s Australian roots, but it also celebrated Dennison’s penchant for natural dials, something which is now synonymous with the brand. Sadly, you may be a little too late for the DateNight now, but Dennison might have just the thing up their sleeve, exclusively stocked at the Time & Tide Watch Discovery Studio in London.
We have two very special dials available, and like before, each and every one is unique. The first is the “Ghost” and, similar to the DateNight, features a white Australian mother-of-pearl marquetry dial in the same rectangular parquet pattern. The MOP tones ripple across the surface in pink, white, silver, and a subtle teal, and of course, being natural, the ripples across each rectangle are unique.
In typical Dennison fashion, the dial lets the finish do the talking, devoid of anything but the lancet handset and, interestingly, a floating Dennison logo etched into the underside of the crystal. As mentioned before, the Ghost dial is available in either polished stainless steel or with a gold PVD finish, and both options are slightly nuanced. The stainless steel version is arguably the most “ghost-like” of the two, with its monochromatic silvery tones, while the gold version comes across as a little more feminine, which is unusual for Dennison, given the ALD’s unisex appeal.
The second dial in this exclusive duo is the polar opposite of the Ghost, finished in a dramatically dark black marble, chosen for the unique vein patterns that flash across the surface. Each dial is cut and polished to perfection, bringing out the contrasting veins that look like bolts of lightning across the dial’s surface. Again, the dial is clean and clutter-free, but this time the Dennison logo is printed on the surface because the polished marble is completely flat. Available in polished stainless steel or gold PVD, the concept of character comes into play again, with the gold version standing out most for its distinct, masculine, luxuriousness. The steel case is equally characterful, especially if you get a dial with more flashes of white.
With watches like these, whether you’re wearing them for a special occasion or even as everyday office attire, you need them to be set-and-forget. You don’t need them to be tool watches, timing your coffee shots or knowing how deep you’re swimming; these are purely expressions of style and character, and so they need to be simple. Thankfully, the ALD is just that. Its Ronda Swiss quartz movement keeps everything super accurate for an extremely long time, and being a tiny movement means that the watch remains compact, as does the tiny, unobtrusive push-down crown. The battery is easily changed when the time comes, as the caseback pops off with a simple tool or case knife, which, while a small detail, reminds me of the vintage dress watches the ALD is based on.
As with all Dennison ALD’s, the two dials come with corresponding strap options, both finished in premium, alligator-patterned Epsom leather. For the black marble dial, there’s a black patent finish, which ages beautifully. The Ghost dial naturally comes with a bright white strap, which, for some, would usually be a bit too striking, but actually makes a lot of sense with the mother-of-pearl dial and, again, leans into the feminine look, especially with the gold case. Talking of the case, look closely at the pin buckle, and while you’ll notice it comes in the same finish, you may not have noticed immediately that it actually takes on the same silhouette as the case itself, cushion-shaped with softly rounded curves. It’s a neat, considered detail that reminds you of Emmanuel Gueit’s intentions with the ALD, bringing it all together as a cohesive piece of design.
