Has Cyrus ditched shock value for the Dominion GMT?

  • The Cyrus Dominion GMT combines a round case and a legible dial to become its most accessible watch yet.
  • The retrograde GMT display is easy to read and doesn’t just double up on the existing 12-hour indicators.
  • It’s limited to 28 pieces in grade 5 titanium or 25 pieces in 18k 5N rose gold.

In every exposure to Cyrus, I have had to go in with a learning mindset. It’s not that its watches are overly inaccessible, but there’s always something groundbreaking you’ll need to wrap your head around to truly appreciate them. And yet here we are facing the Cyrus Dominion GMT at Watches and Wonders 2025, with its round case made of industry-standard metals, featuring a relatively simple complication, and a dial which is incredibly easy to comprehend. Has Cryus dipped its toe into the mainstream? Not quite, but it’s certainly one of the avant-garde brand’s most accessible pieces to date.

Cyrus Dominion GMT 1

If you’re unfamiliar with Cyrus, it’s a Swiss independent that has been headed up by master watchmaker Jean-François Mojon since the brand’s inception in 2010. He wasn’t the founder, but it has been something of a playground for his creativity while his own company Chronode continues to work with some of watchmaking’s most daring brands, including Leica and Fleming. Previous releases from Cyrus have included the Kleypcys Vertical Tourbillon Sapphire and the Klepcys DICE Racing chronograph, challenging both the standards of materials and design. The Dominion GMT however, stemmed mostly from a consumer need rather than Mojon’s own whims, and that’s how it ended up as an intoxicating balance between utility and decoration.

Cyrus Dominion GMT 2

It’s no secret that people who own high luxury watches are much more likely to be travelling around the world on a regular basis, so it naturally follows that Cyrus should cater to that audience. But while the various Cyrus Klepcys GMT watches have all shared an eccentric appeal, the Dominion GMT is the first one to seem like it could fly under the radar when appropriate. Its 42mm round case doesn’t draw too much attention to itself in lightweight grade 5 titanium, however, it may be an eye-catcher in 18k 5N rose gold. The 16.13mm thickness is also something to be aware of, as it’s not going to be sliding under many cuffs. That said, the tall stature can be considered a worthy tradeoff for the 100m water resistance. It’s pretty uncommon to find a watch of this magnitude with an in-house movement that you can comfortably take in the pool.

Cyrus Dominion GMT 3

The dial is nothing particularly new for Cyrus, having used this layout for all of its previous GMT watches. However, the balance of colour comes across as much more refined and restrained than usual. The palm tree upper bridge has been given a galvanic treatment with 5N rose gold and is finished with a mix of brushing and sandblasted finishes, orchestrating a grand character. It has a distinct Art Deco feel to it, combining organic smoothness with structural rigidity. That’s backed up by the relatively simple hand set and the triple-pointed star as the running seconds wheel.

What makes this GMT so easily legible is the retrograde 24-hour display, showcasing Cyrus’ adaptability, and it’s a neat point of difference from other GMTs that just match up the 24-hour time to its 12-hour equivalent. It’s powered by the in-house calibre CYR708, which you can admire through the skeletonised dial or the sapphire display caseback, with a 4Hz beat rate and a 55-hour power reserve with automatic winding. It also boasts some beautiful decoration which mirrors the palm tree motif, along with a variable inertia balance wheel.
