WATCHSPOTTING: A recovering Conor McGregor and a pre-show Biebs are making 36mm gold Rolex great again

It’s been nearly two weeks since The Notorious MMA, Conor McGregor, suffered a gruesome leg injury at UFC 264. After a successful three and a half hour surgery, you may have expected him to be bed-ridden, quietly recovering at home.

Well, you’d be wrong. Properly wrong.

Here is Conor living the Cabana life with Justin Bieber out in Beverly Hills, on a casted and wrapped leg to boot. There are bottles of whiskey (his co-founded brand Proper Twelve, of course), a ton of tattoos and for good measure, a couple of carats. You can’t miss that factory ice on Conor’s wrist.

It’s almost certain, despite the low-res image, that Conor is rocking his recently picked up  18K yellow gold Rolex Day-Date 36, reference M128348rbr-0036. Purchased in February, the watch has an entrancing degradé green diamond-set dial. And the bling doesn’t stop there as both the bezel and presidential bracelet the watch comes on are also diamond set.

In his February 7th post on Instagram, McGregor writes: “A retro styled day date of the modern era. Brand new! You won’t see this green often, nor the diamonds wrapped around the barrel in this manner. A timeless, classic, vintage style, modern Rolex watch. Like something you would have seen on Tupac in the 90s. Incredible! #OnlyGodCanJudge”. A pretty accurate review we have to admit – fancy a side-hustle writing for us Notorious?

As for the Biebs, he appears to be giving his wrist a rest in this chilled moment. However, given recent spottings, we’d be prepared to bet his version – the older 36mm yellow gold Day-Date II, on which only the dial and bezel are diamond set – isn’t far away. Both watch choices, looking perfect on the wrist, show the place of 36mm for all kinds of men, from pretty boy pop stars to punchy Irishmen.

This is not the first time Bieber has been spotted wearing precious metal in 36mm, in fact, he made headlines acquiring the watch in the wake of his wedding – a little wedding gift as he cheekily explained. It is clear he has an affinity for classic diameters and he’s onto something here, too. By no means inexpensive, 36mm precious metal models such as the Day Date and Royal Oak are, proportionally, a real value proposition to the educated buyer today. Perhaps the Biebs has been doing his homework on Watchville.

So, why were these two pictured together? Well, Conor will be attending Justin’s show – which is happening as we speak – at SOFI Stadium in Los Angeles. They are also there to celebrate the Biebs’ new Balenciaga Campaign as well as the success of his fashion line, Drewhouse.
