Jimmy Carr is one of my favourite comedians. His quick wit consistently incites belly laughs while his risqué punchlines are some of the best in the business. What’s less known about the British comedian is his incredible taste for watches, which he puts on full display throughout the comedy show Your Face or Mine that he co-hosts with fellow comedian Katherine Ryan (also hysterical). As you watch him masterfully roast guests who come on the show, you will also notice some astounding timepieces that make cameos throughout.
Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 5712/1A and 5712/R
More often than not, you will spot Carr wearing his go-to Patek Philippe Nautilus 5712 in stainless steel. The 5712 is a more complicated 5711, including a power-reserve indicator and moonphase into the real estate of the blue dial. While some may prefer the plainer dial of the standard time and date only Nautilus, the 5712 has its benefits as well. Aside from the added complication, which may or may not be up your alley, I think we can all agree its usage of the Caliber 240 PS IRM C LU is a welcome upgrade.
The 324 SC in the 5711 uses a winding rotor that obstructs pretty much half the movement from view at all times. The Caliber 240 utilises a micro rotor, which means the entirety of the movement and its top-tier finishes are on full display.
Jimmy clearly has an affection for the reference as he also owns a 5712/R, which is effectively a rose gold 5712 on a leather strap instead of a stainless steel bracelet.
Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona ref. 6239
His face in the screen grab above is pretty much the face I made when I saw what he was wearing. Not only is it a Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona ref. 6239, but it is a 6239 paired with a black alligator Bund strap! While the watch is undoubtedly gorgeous on its factory bracelet, putting it on a Bund is a nice tribute to Paul Newman, who made this configuration iconic in the watch world. It is a clear sign that Jimmy Carr is not just after expensive items, but a true watch enthusiast as well.
Patek Philippe Aquanaut ref. 5968A
Probably the most casual watch on this list, and I use “casual” somewhat loosely, is his Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5968A. The giveaway for this watch spot is the coloured chronograph hands. The first chronograph in the Aquanaut collection, the Reference 5968 stands out with a youthful pop of orange against the familiar black dial.
The watch utilises a self-winding flyback chronograph movement, Caliber CH 28‑520 C, and it comes with two straps: one orange, one black, in an ultra-resistant composite material. Carr has opted for the black rubber strap in this instance presumably to better synch with his razor-sharp tailoring.
