Christopher Ward partners with seconde/seconde/ once more to create the ultimate watch enthusiasts holiday watch

As a watch enthusiast, choosing a watch to take on holiday is an almost impossible task. If you’re anything like me, you have to take multiple watches, not only to make use of the expensive watch roll you bought and never use, but also because wearing the same watch to dinner that you wore by the pool is, of course, quite frankly insane. And when you finally make it to your holiday destination, how on earth are you going to use those watches you wear every day at home to ruthlessly plan your activities now that your routine is completely upended? Well, Christopher Ward has partnered with Parisian wristwatch rebel seconde/seconde/ for the second time to bring you the solution to all these problems.
The C60 Pool Diver x seconde/seconde/ is a playful take on last year’s summer-hit C60 Trident Reef, but is also a sequel to a previous CW x seconde/seconde/ collab: the C65 Desk Diver. The Desk Diver took all the aspects of the functional diver and added a fun twist, playing on the fact that watch enthusiasts rarely actually take these things diving and instead spend more time in the office. Conversely, the C60 Pool Diver does the opposite. It takes the enormously capable C60 and adds a tongue-in-cheek splattering of “pool-tool” summer-holiday-based irony, combined with a delightfully summery colourway.
Let’s get on to the watches’ specifications first. As I mentioned, the foundation is the C60 Trident Reef, so it’s certainly capable of handling everything a good holiday can throw at it. At 41mm wide and 11.45mm thick, its stainless steel case is sized well enough to be comfortable yet not disappear on your wrist when all you’ve got on is your favourite swimming trunks. Diving to the bottom of the deep end shouldn’t be an issue either, with the sapphire crystal, screw-down caseback and screw-down crown providing 200 metres of water resistance, and a decorated helium escape valve ensuring sand won’t scratch your watch the same way it does your sunglasses.
This wouldn’t be a collaboration with seconde/seconde/ if it didn’t have an interesting dial, and this one is certainly an attention grabber. The C60 Pool Diver’s matte white dial is divided into five coloured zones, each corresponding to a holiday-focused activity and duration, with a corresponding icon on the white ceramic bezel. Starting at 12 o’clock is a relatively short ‘READING’ scale, and next comes the “NICE TAN / SKIN DAMAGE (RATIO)” indicator that can be used to track your daily UV exposure – it should be noted that Christopher Ward has carefully added a disclaimer to accept no responsibility for extreme tan lines.
A sun lounger marks the next stage of what Christopher Ward calls “decompression”, or relaxing poolside. In place of a traditional date window sits a martini glass, displaying the ‘MAX UNITS PER DAY ‘, which, interestingly, will only ever increase as your holiday progresses. Next on the timeline is a subtle reminder to ‘FLEX’ on those at home still trapped behind their desks, complete with its own selfie-camera icon in the bezel. Finally comes sunset, and with it, the final vacation stage of ‘CONTEMPLATING AND/OR RECONSIDERING LIFE CHOICES’; the point many of us reach when we inevitably decide that living at your holiday destination is the only sensible choice to escape from the dull reality of life back home.
Similar to the Desk Diver, the Pool Diver features an engraved closed case back that hides the Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement inside. It’s a solid, dependable movement with a 38-hour power reserve, which should keep you covered for a few days while you dip in and out of the pool. It’s the Elaboré grade of Sellita, which means it’s been adjusted in three positions and offers an accuracy of +/-7 sec/day, up to +/- 20 sec/day, while beating at 28,800 Vph. Despite being hidden by the caseback, the rotor features the twin-flag pattern over a ‘Colimaçoné’ finish.
Finally, the C60 Pool Diver is available on a range of dial-matching Aquaflex rubber straps finished in blue, white or orange. This is contrasted with the option of the 3-link stainless steel Bader bracelet, but I have to say, for the full beach-holiday effect, the rubber straps are the killer option here. Alongside this, each Pool Diver box includes an inflatable drinks holder that carries two beverages, along with two reusable rubber straws, ensuring you can stay hydrated as your maximum daily units increase.
The C60 Pool Diver is Christopher Ward’s fourth collaboration piece with seconde/seconde/, and arguably, it’s its most ambitious yet. It does some heavy lifting from a summer watch perspective while adding playful, ironic imagery that’s not only fun but, in true seconde/seconde/style, points a finger at how absurd we can be as watch enthusiasts, sometimes. Unlike the Desk Diver before it, the Pool Diver isn’t a limited edition, but instead will only be available during a limited period, so if you want one in time for your summer holiday, you’d better be quick.
