Christopher Ward strikes up a light show with the C1 Bel Canto Lumière

Tom Austin
  • Christopher Ward has unveiled probably its most adventurous Bel Canto yet, the strikingly luminous Lumière.
  • Built on the ever-popular Bel Canto platform, the Lumière uses luminescent decoration to turn the sonnerie au passage watch into a spectacular lightshow.
  • Polishing off the dazzling glow, the Lumière even features a luminous strap, a rare sight, and a first for Christopher Ward.

I’ve now written several pieces about the C1 Bel Canto from different angles, and while we’re certainly no strangers to it, I’ll admit I wasn’t sure how Christopher Ward could possibly improve on the model. After all, it’s a GPHG-award-winning watch that’s captured imaginations and taken the British microbrand world by storm. While we’ve seen several dial variations and colours appear over the past couple of years, nothing quite prepared us for what comes next.

The original Bel Canto struck a perfect balance between futuristic design and classical complication. Yet its concept still left room to push further into the futuristic side. The subsequent dial variations, while bold for their time, never fully explored that potential. That is, until now. The C1 Bel Canto Lumière, French for the word “Light”, takes that vision and propels it into warp speed.

At first glance, the Lumière is unmistakably a Bel Canto, with its 41mm grade 5 titanium case doing its job by feeling premium and well-proportioned, without stealing attention away from what’s important about the watch. It’s ridiculously comfortable, tactile, and light, and wonderfully finished, with a combination of mainly brushed surfaces and subtle polishing in all the right areas. Also, the dull grey of the titanium stands out, giving the watch a warmer look than your typical steel watch.

The dial, however, is anything but typical. The layout is again, unmistakably Bel Canto; the time-telling dial at 12 and the rest taken up by the wonderful architecture of the chiming complication, make it instantly recognisable. But that’s where the similarity ends, because this dial has some striking differences. First of all, it’s probably better to look at this watch in the dark first, to get the full lightshow effect.

The time-telling dial at 12 o’clock starts with a smoked sapphire disc topped with a blue Globolight ring, and a linear brushed handset, both tipped with matching Globolight luminescent material. The result is an insane, glowing halo effect which makes reading the time on the Lumière a breeze, arguably something that has been relatively difficult on Bel Canto’s of the past.

The main dial plate is finished in a vibrant teal colour, with a sunburst brushed effect emanating from the time-telling dial, drawing your focus there. This effect is complemented by the application of several layers of Super-LumiNova rays, both in blue and green, that are so bright they even glow slightly in the daylight. The effect is quite literally out-of-this-world, not only drawing your eyes into that awesome glowing halo, but setting off a stunning visual light show when the lights go out.

The rest of the dial is, of course, made up of the components of the chiming module, which lends it a pretty monochromatic look, adding to that space-age design. The module itself is a very contemporary feature too, upgrading the Sellita SW200-1 base movement to the Christopher Ward FS01 calibre that resides inside the watch. The automatic movement carries over all the features we already know the Bel Canto so well for, the 38-hour power reserve, 4Hz beat rate, and the beautifully simple pusher at 4 o’clock that operates the column wheel, turning the hourly chime on or off.

Several brands go to town on overall watch design, and while we’ve seen interesting use cases for luminescent materials before, many fall somewhat short in strap design. All too often, we see fantastic watches paired with straps that sort of match the watch’s aesthetic, but that’s usually where it ends. Christopher Ward always has to take that next step further.

The Lumière features a white rubber strap with Super-LumiNova-imbued material embedded along its edges, giving a full-wrist glow that matches the dial, which, honestly, looks pretty incredible if lume is your thing. But fear not! If it’s a little too much for you, the Lumière is also available on both the Consort and Bader bracelets, finished in grade 2 titanium.
