Chopard x Art in Time debut Alpine Eagle His & Hers Chameleon Set
Zach Blass- Chopard x Art in Time team up to release a 15-piece Alpine Eagle limited edition set.
- Don’t get bogged down by the traditional his and hers nomenclature, as the set is comprised of a 41mm XPS model and a 36mm model.
- Both feature “chameleon” dials that dynamically shift from blue to purple in hue.
Some may roll their eyes when they see the “his and hers” trope in jewellery and watchmaking, but ultimately, we are intelligent enough to know that it boils down to a set of watches, typically one larger and one smaller, oriented towards partners who would like to have a tangible and luxurious emblem of their connection. Chopard and Art in Time have come together to launch a highly exclusive limited edition with 15 sets of Alpine Eagle 41m XPS and 36mm watches. And selfishly, as a currently single watch lover, I would be more than happy to wear both.
The Chopard Alpine Eagle is the venerated brand’s entry into the increasingly saturated integrated bracelet luxury sports watch segment but has been, from the outset, distinguished from its competitive set through its usage of proprietary materials such as Lucent Steel and eagle iris dial texture. The collection has since expanded, its wildly wonderful spectrum of bold hues unlike anything else within the category. Even internally speaking, the collection has stood out with technical evolutions such as the XPS 8HF – a watch with a movement that beats beyond your typical high-frequency calibre, at twice the rate of your standard 4Hz movement.
Returning back to the externals, Chopard particularly has nailed its exploration of iridescently styled dials as of late, and its collaboration with Art in Time leans into this evolution with a “chameleon” dial that expresses a spectrum of blue to violet. This dial features on both watches, which also both boast 100-metre water-resistant stainless steel cases. The 41mm XPS is in full steel, but the 36mm model has an 18k white gold bezel that is better suited for the setting of 36 baguette-cut sapphires that evoke the same eye-catching colour gradient as the dial.
The in-house micro-rotor automatic L.U.C 96.40-L calibre within the 41mm XPS has the advantage in terms of stamina, its power reserve 65 hours versus the 42 of the in-house 09.01-C movement within the 36mm model. It also is a subjectively more attractive calibre with its Geneva Hallmark certification. That being said, both are very high-quality, COSC-certified movements.
While smaller in stature, it’s fair to assume that the sapphire-set 36mm Alpine Eagle is a bigger driver of the limited set’s price of €60,250. And speaking of limited, this isn’t one of those “limited editions” numbering hundreds or thousands of watches. To have only 15 sets total is truly exclusive, and whoever the eventual buyers are, whether partners or greedy solo collectors, I can confidently say I will be jealous, as each watch within the set is an eye-catching standout.
