For Chopard’s 30th year operating its Manufacture Fleurier facility, the brand has returned to its beginning: the L.U.C 1860, the watch that effectively launched the L.U.C programme in 1997. This new iteration doesn’t reinvent the formula; it refines it, and does so in steel. It sits at the intersection of the brand’s founding principles: in-house movement production, high-quality finishing certifications, and a design language that prioritises restraint over spectacle. Just how hard is it to beat Chopard’s latest smart casual dress watch? Let’s dig in and find out.
The case
At 36.5mm in diameter and 8.20mm thick, the L.U.C 1860 occupies the smaller end of the contemporary dress watch spectrum — deliberately so. The proportions mirror the original, and for collectors who prefer a watch that actually disappears under a cuff, this will register as a considered choice rather than a constraint.
The case material is Lucent Steel™, Chopard’s proprietary alloy developed in-house, first introduced across its Alpine Eagle collection in 2019 and now applied to all Chopard steel timepieces. The material is produced using an 80% recycled content process and claims hypoallergenic properties comparable to surgical steel. What’s more practically relevant, at least for finishing purposes, is its hardness. It takes and holds fine surface treatments well, which matters when you’re trying to satisfy the Poinçon de Genève. And that’s the more significant note here.
The Poinçon de Genève, one of the more demanding independent certifications in Swiss watchmaking, applies both to the movement and to the case. Achieving its finishing requirements in steel is, according to Chopard, considerably harder to execute than in gold, owing to how the material responds to the polishing and bevelling processes involved.
The dial
The dial is where the L.U.C 1860 makes its most substantive claim on your attention. It is crafted in 18-carat white gold and hand-guillochéd with a sunburst pattern using a vintage rose engine lathe — one of a very limited number still in operation — operated by artisans at Metalem, the Chopard Group’s dial workshop (and a famous dial supplier for the likes of Philippe Dufour).
The process involves no digital assistance; the depth and regularity of the pattern are determined entirely by the craftsperson’s hands. Additional guillochéd rings around the dial’s perimeter catch and redirect light in a way that changes meaningfully depending on the viewing angle. The colour is named Areuse Blue, a reference to the Areuse River in the Val-de-Travers region near the manufacture. It reads as a cool, mid-depth blue, not navy, not pale, with the kind of tonal variation that an engine-turned dial produces naturally. It’s a compelling combination with the case material.
The layout is kept deliberate. Chevron-shaped hour markers in white gold, Dauphine hands, a satin-brushed chapter ring, and a small seconds sub-dial at 6 o’clock. There is no date complication, which Chopard frames as a decision to preserve the symmetry of the design. Whether that reads as principled or limiting is largely a matter of taste, but it does give the dial a coherence that date apertures, particularly at this size, often compromise.
The strap
The watch ships on an anthracite grey grained calfskin leather strap with tone-on-tone stitching, fastened by a Lucent Steel™ pin buckle engraved with the L.U.C logo. The pairing is sober and consistent with the watch’s overall register, and the buckle maintains material continuity with the case. There’s nothing unusual to note here. It functions as a dress strap should, and the colour choice is, in my opinion, an excellent, versatile pairing.
The movement
The calibre is the L.U.C 96.40-L, a direct descendant of the 96.01-L that Chopard produced in 1996 — the movement that launched the entire L.U.C collection. The evolution is meaningful: at 3.30mm thick, this self-winding movement is exceptionally slim for what it delivers. A 22-carat gold micro-rotor that self-winds two stacked barrels through Chopard’s Twin technology, yielding a 65-hour power reserve.
The twin-barrel configuration also contributes to more consistent torque delivery across the power reserve cycle, which has a measurable effect on rate stability. The movement is COSC-certified as a chronometer — independently tested over 15 days across five positions and three temperature ranges, with a permissible daily rate variation of +6/-4 seconds.
It also carries the Poinçon de Genève, requiring that assembly, adjustment, and casing all take place within the Canton of Geneva, and that finishing meets the hallmark’s strict standards. Bridges are decorated with Côtes de Genève, surfaces are polished and bevelled by hand, and a swan’s-neck regulator allows for precise rate adjustment. The combination of COSC and Poinçon de Genève on the same watch is relatively rare. Most brands elect one or the other. Having both means the movement has passed independent precision testing and independent finishing inspection — neither of which Chopard controls.
The verdict
The L.U.C 1860 Chronometer doesn’t attempt to surprise. It is, in almost every sense, a refinement of a watch Chopard has been building for 30 years — smaller than most of the market has moved towards, quieter in presentation than much of what surrounds it, and stacked with certifications that require third-party validation rather than self-attribution.
What makes it worth considering is the convergence of what’s genuinely difficult to do: a proper, true hand-guillochéd dial, an ultra-thin self-winding movement carrying dual independent certifications, and Poinçon de Genève finishing applied to a steel case. None of those are marketing claims that can be stretched — they’re either present, or they aren’t.
Calatrava who? Give me this L.U.C 1860 in Areuse blue any day of the week. The size, the craft, and the spec offered here are aligned with everything I personally look for in a watch within this category. So, yes. This is a very, very hard casual dress watch to beat indeed.
