Teddy Baldassarre unveils his first-ever collaboration watch: a special edition Brew Metric

If you’re reading this, you’ll almost certainly be aware of how “watch YouTube” has exploded in recent years, giving rise to some of the most notable voices and faces in the watch industry today. Several of those creators grew from small channels set up in a bedroom to worldwide sensations within our community, and one of the leading figures in the space is, of course, Teddy Baldassarre. Teddy has cultivated a massive following after starting out with watch reviews and other educational cross-platform content, and now has one of the most influential platforms in the space, even recently opening his own retail space in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio.
But something was missing. Naturally, over time, Teddy has had plenty of opportunities to create collaboration watches, but, forever the respectable character, he only wanted to do it when the time was right and with the right brand. One brand in particular is close to Teddy’s heart: another growing US brand, Brew. Back in 2018, near the beginning of both founders’ careers, Teddy and Jonathon Ferrer, the founder of Brew, got together for a video interview that sparked not only a lot of interest around the brand but a close friendship between the two.
Fast forward to today, and the first-ever Teddy Baldassarre collaboration watch is born, and it just had to be a Brew. Specifically, it’s a Metric, a stunning one at that, and typically, it has a few tricks up its sleeve.
The Brew Metric is a familiar watch now, with its integrated bracelet, TV-shaped case, and thin, wearable proportions. It’s a gorgeously comfortable watch to wear, and a perfect mix of futuristic design details with retro 70s style. The 36mm stainless steel case is retained for this special edition, along with the 10.75mm thickness, and nicely finished brushed features, complemented by subtly polished details. The case offers 50 meters of water resistance, even with a push-down crown and those traditional chronograph pushers, so not only is it stylish, it’s a practical watch, too.
The dial is where most of Teddy’s influence shines through, though. First of all, it’s based on varying tones of dark blue, with the main dial plate finished with a finely textured surface, and the asymmetrical sub-dials finished in darker and lighter tones. The coffee timing theme, and recessed running seconds dial at six remains, and the elongated chronograph hand sits proudly at the centre, finished in a baby blue lacquer.
Speaking of hands, that’s one of the first areas to have received a subtle change, departing from squared-off hands and offering redesigned, pointed pencil-style hands with matching baby-blue finishing. The subdial hands are still squared, though, this time finished in white. The keen-eyed among you will also notice that the controversial date window at 4:30 is now missing, too, and I have to say, even as an owner of the OG Metric, its absence balances out the intentionally unbalanced dial very well.
Flip the watch over, and behind the customised Brew/Teddy case back sits a Seiko VK68 mechaquartz movement. It’s a particular feature of the Metric that I think gives it so much character, as it maintains the incredible accuracy and practicality of a quartz movement, and blends it with the satisfying mechanical clunk of using the chronograph pushers, along with a mechanically driven, sweeping chronograph hand. Finally, it has to be said that the use of this quality movement means the Metric is considered exceptional value for money at this level.
The Metric’s recognisability is in no small part thanks to its stainless steel integrated bracelet. It seamlessly connects to the case via 22mm quick-release spring bars and now features a handy micro-adjustment system, too, via the folding clasp. It can also be further adjusted by removing links via a traditional pin system, but the micro adjuster is great for nailing that perfect fit. Brew also offers a range of rubber and leather straps if that’s what you prefer, and there are some perfect blue options available that would match the Teddy Baldassarre edition brilliantly.
