I asked Zach again today how he was recovering from his first watch fair, and what was it like for him? “I fell asleep every night with my iPad on my lap,” he said. “I was trying to catch all my thoughts, trying to make the days last, but I’d eventually just pass out.”

These are, for the record, not OH&S standards that I expect from my team. But enthusiasm for the subject is. And sending our newly minted Deputy Editor into battle in Geneva for Geneva Watch Days revealed to us a soldier who not only didn’t sleep on his post. He hardly slept at all, such was the excitement level.

And now, a week or so after the action, with Zach safely returned to Manhattan, we asked him to spill on his five favourite watches of the fair. He’d had to do like we all do on assignment, which is think on our feet about the most seismic first impressions the watches we’d just seen made – and finally, in this video, he and Marcus, our rather talented Amsterdam-based creative director, could spill on what his favourites were.

Honestly, practically all are a surprise to me. Yes, many were in Zach & Mike’s wraps last weeks, but it’s another thing to hear the rationale for their inclusion more thoroughly expounded – and expound Zach does. Boy, I love the way he talks when it’s unvarnished appreciation for a new watch discovery. There’s a level of authenticity you can never quite regain once you’ve collected your thoughts. Plenty of that in spades in this video.

And lastly, let me say these lists are worth taking note of: I know all too well that the sugar rush of a new novelty can wear off as quickly as a glass of Coke as you move from one brace of watches to the next. The fact that these are the five that left the deepest cut are a great complement to these watchmakers. On that complimentary note, let me also say bravo to Zach, who is making his first solo debut right here. Bright things are in store, no doubt in my mind.
